After the tragedies of 9/11 and the massive shutdown of air travel, however, his parents' business went bankrupt.

Originally a military police officer in the United States Army, Mr. Mattos then became a local police officer for nearly a decade beginning in 1990. Encouraged by his parents to leave his profession and become involved in the family business, he has since also been serving as the owner and lead instructor of Kuntao Silat Kali Hawaii where he teaches Indonesian martial arts. Civically, Mr. Mattos is the president of the Kona Dance and Performing Arts in Hawaii.
Prior to embarking on his career, Mr. Mattos earned an Associate of Arts in criminal justice from Sierra College in Rocklin, California, in 1981. Additionally, he has been certified as a coroner in the county of Hawaii. Happily married to his wife, Laurie Mattos, for many years, he is the proud father of three children and grandfather to two wonderful grandchildren. Mr. Mattos considers raising a family to be the one true highlight of his life.
