Ms. Malone is renowned as a registered nurse and a certified diabetes educator with more than five decades of service to her patients and discipline. As a high school senior, she was approached by her school's guidance counselor, who encouraged her to apply to nursing school. She initially pursued an education at the Saint Francis Hospital School of Practical Nursing, earning a Licensed Practical Nurse certificate in 1965. Subsequently, Ms. Malone continued her academic efforts with an Associate of Science in Nursing from Jamestown Community College in 1984.
In 1984, Ms. Malone began her career working at Olean General Hospital. Obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in registered nursing from Daemen College in 1997, she remained active in a general nursing practice at Olean through 2002. In 1998, she became a certified diabetes educator for the hospital, specializing in collaborative patient education, advocacy, and care management. From 2002 to 2010, Ms. Malone found success as a visiting CCHD nurse before returning to Olean on a full-time basis.
Ms. Malone attributes her success in medicine to her listening skills and sensitivity. She believes that effective care is a result of responding to what the patient shows and tells the provider, rather than what the provider assumes will be the best course of action. A dedicated supporter of the American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society, Ms. Malone has further flourished as a member of the American Diabetes Association and the American Association of Diabetes Educators.
