Darlyn Counihan Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Ms. Counihan has been endorsed by Marquis Who's Who as a leader in the fields of mathematics and education

SILVER SPRING, MD, June 16, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Darlyn Counihan with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Ms. Counihan celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

With more than 35 years of teaching to her name, Darlyn J. Counihan is currently retired, having worked for Montgomery County Public Schools as a math teacher, a math resource teacher, a math team coach and a part-time math consultant in the Gifted and Talented Office. Known for her persistence, creative, and standard-bearer for the mathematics departments at her respective schools, she was a magnet mathematics teacher and mathematics team coach at Takoma Park Middle School, where she taught seventh- and eighth-grade students in a highly-selective mathematics/sciences/computer magnet program, in which only approximately 100 students are accepted each year. Equally competitive for teachers to teach in the program, she recalls the challenges of that environment, yet she is forever grateful for the opportunity. Teaching in Maryland her entire career, she previously held appointments at Kennedy High School, Ridgeview Junior High School, Takoma Park Junior High School, and Cabin John Junior High School between 1970 and 1984.

Ms. Counihan further served as an area three advisory council member for Montgomery County Public Schools from 1972 to 1973 and as a coach for boys' basketball and girls' volleyball at Montgomery County Recreation Association in 1971. The co-author of a geometry textbook, she was a contributing author of a mathematics CD-ROM game geared at sixth to eighth grade students called "Descarte's Cove." Winning contests and accolades at nearly every school in which she was employed, Ms. Counihan overcame adversity through her radical yet effective approach.

Growing up, Ms. Counihan's family struggled financially, and knowing that education was her best path out of poverty, she utilized her talent for math and decided she would become a teacher. Wanting to inspire kids to raise themselves up as she did, she sought to expand her knowledge at Hood College in Frederick, Maryland, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics with a minor in secondary education in 1970. Impressively, she continued her postgraduate studies at the University of College Park, Maryland, while also holding a full-time job. Devoting herself entirely to her work for eight years, she returned to her studies at Hood College, completing all requisite courses and all required comprehensive examinations within a 10-month period, ultimately earning a Master of Arts in school administration in 1982. Additionally, Ms. Counihan completed more than 55 hours of coursework throughout her academic efforts.

In light of her many accomplishments, Ms. Counihan has gained recognition in the form of many awards, including the Women in Education Award in 1986, the Albert Shanker Award in 1993, and the David W. Taylor Award from Sigma Xi in 1993. Presented with the Edyth May Sliffe Award from the Mathematical Association of America in 1996, she accepted grants from the National Science Foundation in 1971, 1972, 1990, and 1992, and she was further cited as a "middle school math guru" by the age of 35 for going above and beyond the expectations set for most teachers. Listed in the National Dean's List between 1982 to 1983, she considers the highlight of her career to be winning the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching in 1990, which led to her being featured in "A Decade of Excellence in Maryland" and receiving a $5,000 prize to spend on educational materials and activities. With a number of her students later finding much success in higher education and in their careers, many of her former students had written letters to endorse her for this accolade, citing her as a "caring, expert and devoted teacher," "inspiring" and a "special and effective educator."

A lifetime member of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, Ms. Counihan has previously been selected for inclusion in such honors publications as the 6th edition of Who's Who in American Education, which was published in 2003, and the 16th through 20th, 22nd, 25th, and 27th editions of Who's Who of American Women, which were published between 1988 and 2008. A Master Teacher of Montgomery County, she notably taught three of the four MCPS Westinghouse Science Talent Search Finalists in 1993. She was further celebrated as the subject of a 1993 poem from Tanya Morant, née Lee, which you can read below:

"If in a box, I were to place
The things you meant to me
I'd get a strong, yet simple chest,
And it would have no key.
For keys mean locks, and locks mean closed,
And your lid is e'er ajar
To love, to help, and understand
All people, near or far.

To symbolize your special love,
In this box, I'd place a heart
A book would show your special gift,
Your unique teaching art.
A ruler for your special touch,
With which you share your talents.
A scale, to show your witty,
Yet serious, sturdy balance.

A line, which will signify
Your overflowing knowledge,
Rules, axioms and definitions
That will stay with me through college.
Finally, within this box,
A note of thanks, you'll find
To let you know, that time may go,
But, you will never leave my mind."

In recognition of outstanding contributions to his profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, Darlyn Counihan has been featured on the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
