A highly successful library director, Mr. Hanway retired in 2015 after holding the post of executive director of the Southeastern Public Library System of Oklahoma since 1991. During this time, he also held leadership positions with various professional organizations including president (2007-08) and bylaws chair of the Mountain Plains Library Association, president of the Oklahoma Library Association (2001-02), and co-chair of the Oklahoma Library Association's legislative committee (2010-12.) He is president (2020-22) of the Friends of Libraries in Oklahoma (FOLIO) and is a past vice president of the Friends of the Oklahoma Center for the Book.
Mr. Hanway received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and a Master of Arts in library science from the University of Iowa in Iowa City. He served in Vietnam (1971-72) and at the Pentagon (1972-73) with the United States Army and in 1974 began his career as library director of Cattermole Memorial Library in Fort Madison, Iowa, before holding the same position at the Norfolk Public Library in Nebraska.
Mr. Hanway was continuously certified as public librarian at the highest level by the Oklahoma Department of Libraries. He is a member of the American Library Association (since 1974), the Mountain Plains Library Association (since 1982), the Oklahoma Library Association (since 1981), and the Friends of Libraries in Oklahoma.
A Paul Harris fellow and past president (2015-16) of the Rotary Club of McAlester, Oklahoma, Mr. Hanway is also a past president of the McAlester Area Arts and Humanities Council. He is a postulant for the diaconate in the Episcopal Diocese of Oklahoma, engages in prison ministry, and served two terms on the standing committee of the Episcopal Diocese of Nebraska. He is a past senior warden of All Saints Episcopal Church, McAlester, Oklahoma. He is a certified mentor in the University of the South's Education for Ministry program.
Mr. Hanway's professional work has earned him the Oklahoma Library Legend Award (2007) and the Distinguished Service Award (2010) from the Oklahoma Library Association, and the Carl Gaumer Library Champion Award (2015) from the Mountain Plains Library Association. In light of his exceptional achievements, Mr. Hanway was selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America.
