An accomplished listee, Ms. Alter celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. Having accrued more than 50 years of inimitable expertise in her profession, Ms. Alter has garnered a laudable reputation as an attorney specializing in marriage and family law. Raised by two lawyers, she fondly recalls sitting in on her parent's conversations regarding the law, which included visits to bar association meetings. She attended the University of Michigan, graduating with honors in 1960 with a Bachelor of Arts. Ms. Alter completed her first year of law school at Harvard Law School, and earned her Bachelor of Laws at Columbia Law School in 1964. She was admitted to practice law by the State Bar of New York in 1965.

From 1964 until 1966, Ms. Alter began her career as an attorney at the Office of the General Counsel of the Insurance Department of the State of New York. She became an associate of Miller and Carlson between 1966 and 1968 and joined the firm of Marshall Bratter, Greene, Allison and Tucker in 1968, becoming a partner in 1974. In 1982 Ms. Alter joined Rosenman and Colin as a partner. In 1997 Ms. Alter joined Kasowitz, Benson, Torres and Friedman LLP. Since 2016, she has found success as a partner of Alter, Woff and Foley LLP.

In the realm of academia, Ms. Alter excelled as an adjunct professor of law at the New York University School of Law from 1983 until 1987, and has served as a visiting faculty member at the University of Chicago Law School. She is a frequent lecturer in her field, and worked on the editorial board of the New York Law Journal from 1987 to 2015. From 1983 until 2013 Ms. Alter was a trustee of The Lawyers' Fund for Client Protection of the State of New York. She served as Chairman from 1985 until 2010. She is a member of the American Law Institute, the New York State Bar Association, the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, the American College of Family Trial Lawyers, the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, and the International Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, where she has held a variety of leadership roles.
