Mr. Wooten is renowned as a retired engineer with a career spanning more than 25 years. Initially drawn to engineering for the career stability of positions in the field, he pursued an education at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga graduating with a Bachelor of Science in engineering in 1975. Mr. Wooten considers earning his bachelor's degree to be the highlight of his career.

From 1975 to 1979, Mr. Wooten began his career as an advanced engineer for Westinghouse, based in Richland, Washington. He further flourished as a senior engineer in Westinghouse's Oak Ridge office from 1979 to 1984, at which point he became active as a senior design engineer for Los Alamos Technical Association. Mr. Wooten remained involved with Los Alamos Technical Association until 1986, and worked from 1987 to 1989 as a development associate for the Oak Ridge Gaseous Diffusion Plant.

Mr. Wooten found success at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory as a development staff member and a development group leader between 1989 and his retirement in 2004. The founder and namesake of the Wooten Family Endowed Engineering and Computer Science Scholarship Fund, he contributes to his local Jaycees chapter. Formerly serving as scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America, Mr. Wooten is a member of the American Society of Heating and the Tennessee Society of Professional Engineers.
