Dr. Pouleur, a renowned cardiologist and specialist in internal medicine, originally joined Pfizer in 1993 as an associate director of clinical research at the pharmaceutical corporation's Groton, Connecticut, location, and worked for two years in this capacity before he was recruited by Bristol-Myers Squibb in Princeton, New Jersey, as the vice president of cardiovascular clinical research and development. In 2001, he rejoined Pfizer at its New York Headquarter, retiring as a vice president in the cardiovascular and metabolic group in January 2017.

A native of Belgium, Dr. Pouleur began his career in academia in 1979 as an assistant professor at his alma mater, the University of Louvain, and later advanced to become a full professor before relocating to the U.S. in 1993 to work for Pfizer. During his academic career, Dr. Pouleur enjoyed five years as a distinguished clinical scientist for Syntex Clinical Research in Palo Alto, California, and in Maindenhead, U.K., between 1988 and 1993.

As a seasoned researcher, Dr. Pouleur has been involved in many experimental pharmacologic studies and in a variety of clinical research. As a result of his years of study, he has contributed over 180 articles to scholarly journals. Dr. Pouleur has also notably been responsible for drug development that has resulted in the approval of six new drugs.

As an alumnus of the University of Louvain, Dr. Pouleur received a Doctor of Medicine and a Doctor of Philosophy in cardiovascular physiology in 1973 and 1980, respectively. He subsequently completed an internship and residency on campus from 1973 until 1977, followed by a National Institutes of Health Fogarty international research fellowship at the University of California San Diego between 1977 and 1979. Shortly thereafter, Dr. Pouleur earned board certification in cardiology and internal medicine through the Université Catholique de Louvain in Belgium in 1980.

Dr. Pouleur is an elected fellow of the American College of Cardiology, the American Heart Association (AHA) and the European Society of Cardiology. He is also a fellow of AHA's Council of Circulation. Outside of his full-time commitments in medicine, Dr. Pouleur is an active member of the Atlantic Salmon Federation and Trout Unlimited. He recently published "Fishing and Cooking My Way" through Wild River Press in 2017.

Dr. Pouleur secured multiple grants throughout his career from such organizations as the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. Recognized with the Damman Prize from the Damman Foundation in 1977, he was awarded a Squibb cardiovascular fellowship in 1982, and he later received the Bekales Prize from the Bekales Foundation in 1986. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Pouleur has been featured in approximately 25 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in the World.
