Friday, PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. Friday is an emeritus professor of criminal justice at the University of North Carolina (UNC) in Charlotte. Recruited from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo after 20 years of excellence on campus, he taught and chaired the department of criminal justice between 1992 and 1998, and served as the director of the Center for Justice Studies in China from 2011 until his retirement in 2016. Dr. Friday, who specialized in delinquency, delinquency prevention, victimology and violence, taught such courses as International Criminal Justice, Violence and the Violent Offender, and Victimology.

Prior to his tenure at UNC and Western Michigan, where he notably served as an associate and full professor, assistant dean and director of criminal justice, Dr. Friday held a faculty appointment at the Ohio State University and the University of Wisconsin. Furthermore, he maintained involvement as an adjunct professor at several institutions in China. Outside of his primary vocational path, Dr. Friday excelled as a visiting Fulbright professor and visiting fellow at several other institutions in Germany, Greece, Sweden and England.

As a seasoned researcher, Dr. Friday studied domestic violence and the police, chronic offenders, drugs, crime and other areas of the law. He also co-authored papers regarding drug trafficking in the Golden Triangle of China as well as the trafficking of women and children and crime in India. As a result of his years of research, Dr. Friday has become a prolific author. Some of his books have included "Global Perspectives on Victimology," which he co-authored with S.P. Singh Makkar in 1995, "Crime and Punishment" with Harry E. Allen in 1981, "Different Responses to Violence in America and Japan" with John P.J. Dussich in 2001 and "Delinquency and Juvenile Justice in the Non-Western World" with Xin Ren in 2006. In addition to his books, Dr. Friday has contributed chapters to books and articles to scholarly journals, as well as a series of articles in a United Nations publication.

Throughout the course of his esteemed career, Dr. Friday served on the International Scientific and Professional Advisory Council (ISPAC) of the United Nations, which held their meetings abroad in Italy. He also helmed a subcommittee, where he was instrumental in writing a draft on restorative justice. On the local level, Dr. Friday served on the Kalamazoo Corrections Center advisory board in 1985, and the State of Michigan Community Corrections Board, 1989-1992, Chair, Kalamazoo County Criminal Justice Commission, 1987-1990, Juvenile Crime Prevention Council – Cabarrus County, NC. (1997-2005), twice on the Charlotte and Mecklenburg Homicide Task Force in 2005 and 2007 and, among other roles, was the chairperson of the Charlotte and Mecklenburg Drug Free Coalition from 2008 to 2012.

Dr. Friday received a Bachelor of Arts at Drew University in 1964. While in pursuit of his degree, he spent a year abroad at the University of Stockholm during 1962-1963. While living in Sweden, he became fascinated in sociology and criminology. Shortly thereafter, Dr. Friday attained a Master of Arts and a Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Wisconsin in 1966 and 1970, respectively. For his dissertation, he had the opportunity to return to Sweden, funded by the University of Chicago, to conduct research by interviewing juvenile delinquents.

To support his career, Dr. Friday has been active with several industry-related organizations. To wit, he has served as the president of the Deviance Section of the International Sociological Association and one of the founders and Chair of the International Division of the American Society of Criminology. Dr. Friday is likewise a past president of the Michigan Criminal Justice Educators Association, a UN representative, executive board member and past treasurer the World Society of Victimology, and a former vice president of the American Society of Criminology.

Dr. Friday received several awards for his career in academia, including two Distinguished Teaching Awards, a Distinguished Scholar Award, an International Educator of the Year Award and a Teacher of the Year Award. He was also bestowed with a Volunteer of the Year Award from Substance Abuse Prevention Services in Charlotte in 2010, and a John P.J. Dussich Lifetime Scholarly Achievement in Victimology Award from the American Society of Victimology in 2006. Furthermore, Dr. Friday was named as the Victimology Consultant of the Month for August from the Office of Victims of Crime in Washington in 2006 and received an Award for Outstanding Contributions to Chinese Research from the China Society for Research in Juvenile Delinquency in 2002.
