Leo McCarthy, MD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Leo McCarthy created and endowed the annual Leo J. McCarthy, MD lectureship in Transfusion Medicine in 1997 at the Indiana University Riley Children's Hospital.

Dr. McCarthy is renowned globally in Transfusion Medicine and as a medical consultant with more than 50 years of experience in Hematology and blood transfusion. He enrolled at Creighton University on a track scholarship. After suffering a career-ending leg injury, he concluded his academic efforts at the University of Nebraska, obtaining a Bachelor of Science, 1962 and a Doctor of Medicine, 1964.

In 1965, Dr. McCarthy was at Navy Doctor with the Marines for a year at Chu Lai, Vietnam, and a recipient of Combat Action and Presidential Unit Citation recognitions. From 1967 to 1971, he was a resident in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at Stanford University. He then began his career in the Pathology Department at the University School of Medicine. He rose through the ranks of academia to become a Professor of Pathology, Medicine, and Pediatrics in 1989, and became an Emeritus Professor in 2003. In retirement, he became the Glenn Irwin Distinguished Faculty I.U. and Distinguished Medical Alumnus, Nebraska.

He excelled as a clinical director of Hematology/Blood Bank at Wishard Memorial Hospital. Besides lecturing medical students and residents, performing autopsies, and signing out slides, etc. he was an expert witness frequently. Board-certified with special competency in Hematology, and was one of the first in the US to achieve a special competency in the new specialty of Transfusion Medicine. Dr. McCarthy was a frequent speaker for the American Red Cross Professional Speakers Bureau and a counselor for the International Society for Blood Transfusion and a member of its Board of Directors.

In 1991, he became a Fellow in the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) of Ireland and in 1994, a Fellow in the RCP Edinburgh. In 1997, he was the proud recipient of the Victor H. Muller Award acknowledging his contributions to Transfusion Medicine. 2000, he became an alumnus member of the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Medical Honor Society Nebraska Chapter and in 2001, honored with the Glenn W. Irwin, Jr., MD Excellence Recognition Award. In 2002, he received the coveted John Elliot Memorial Award recognizing an individual for outstanding service to the American Association of Blood Banks. He also became a Sagamore of the Wabash, Indiana's highest award by the Governor, in recognition of his "mastery of and passion for Transfusion Medicine". In 2018, he became an honorary member of Phi Beta Kappa at the University of Nebraska. Recently, he received the Irving S. Cutter solid gold medal from Phi Rho Sigma, Iota chapter in Nebraska for his many contributions to Medicine.

He created and endowed the annual Leo J. McCarthy, MD lectureship in Transfusion Medicine in 1997 at the Indiana University Riley Children's Hospital perhaps the oldest annual lectureship in this country. He also established the first accredited fellowship in Transfusion Medicine in Indiana in collaboration with the Blood Center and endowed the McCarthy Award for History of Medicine Research at RCP Edinburgh. He has received 1,925 citations and in 2020 published The Modern Pioneers in Transfusion Medicine which includes 40 Transfusion articles outlining the history of Blood Transfusion.
