Bruce A. McFadden, PhD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Now a professor emeritus of biochemistry and biophysics, Dr. Bruce A. McFadden played an instrumental role on the Washington State University campus for several decades .

Now a professor emeritus of biochemistry and biophysics, Dr. McFadden played an instrumental role on the Washington State University campus for several decades as both a teacher and mentor. Retiring in 1997, during his tenure he transitioned through multiple ranks ranging from an instructor to a full professor from 1956-1966. Moreover, Dr. McFadden had the opportunity during his career to serve as the director of science development and the chairman of the department of biochemistry.

Dr. McFadden has been a visiting professor at the University of Illinois, as well as abroad at the University of Leicester in England, the University of Florence in Italy and Technical University in Germany. He excelled as a visiting scientist and consultant for various organizations and journals and a panelist of research grants for the U.S. Department of Energy, American Chemical Society, and National Institutes of Health. Renowned for his work in the fields of microbiology, plant physiology, and biochemistry, he notably holds several patents in his field. As a result of his research, Dr. McFadden has contributed multiple articles to various scholarly journals and has likewise served as an editor of Archives Microbiology between 1977 and 1983. He was a sports editor for Whitman College Pioneers as well.

In his role as a community leader, Dr. McFadden worked as the president of the Sunnyside School Parent Teacher Association in Pullman in 1972. He also was chairman of the Beyond 83-84 citizens' committee appointed by the Pullman School Board. An elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1973. Dr. McFadden is also a member of other significant organizations. Most notably, he was the founding president of the Association of Research Professors (WSU), and past president of the Pacific Slope Biochemistry Society, the Washington-Idaho border section of the American Chemical Society and of the chemical honorary Phi Lambda Upsilon at UCLA.

Dr. McFadden received a Bachelor of Arts degree in chemistry with honors at Whitman College in 1952. In 2002 he was selected and served as the president of his 50th class reunion. He achieved a Doctor of Philosophy in chemistry/biochemistry at the University of California Los Angeles in 1956. For his achievements, Dr. McFadden received an honorary doctorate from Whitman College in 1978.

The recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship in 1972, Dr. McFadden also received a Research Career Development Award (1963-1969) and multiple other fellowships from the National Institutes of Health and research grants from the National Science Foundation and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. In 1974, he was honored with the Distinguished Faculty Award from Washington State University. In 1980-81 he spent one year in Munich under the auspices of a Humboldt Distinguished American Scientist Award. In 1991 he received the Faculty Excellence award in Research from WSU and in 1994 received the Faculty award from the WSU library. In 2015 an international gathering of students and postdoctoral colleagues met in Pullman to recognize his contributions. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. McFadden has been included in several editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the West.
