An accomplished listee, Dr. Smith celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. Celebrating more than four decades as a distinguished faculty member at the Ohio State University (OSU) in Columbus, Dr. Smith was hired in 1980 as an assistant professor in the department of industrial engineering. He later served as an associate professor in 1986 and has since found success as a full professor of industrial and system engineering in the department of integrated systems engineering since 1992. During his tenure, Dr. Smith has taught numerous courses, including Cognitive Systems Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, and Intelligent Information Systems, excelled as the director of the university's Institute for Ergonomics between 1998 and 2017 and chaired the department of integrated system engineering from 2013 to 2017. Formerly aligned with his alma mater, the University of Michigan for one year, Dr. Smith earned distinction as a lecturer in the department of industrial engineering and a research scientist in the Center for Ergonomics between 1979 and 1980.

Outside of his commitments in the classroom, Dr. Smith has provided his expertise as a consultant for Metron since 1998, Cavan Solutions since 2019 and Infoscitex since 2020. He previously consulted for SAAB, Leidos, ATAC, and the American Institutes for Research. Likewise, as a seasoned researcher, Dr. Smith has contributed numerous scholarly articles to several peer reviewed journals. He also edited the 2018 book, "Cognitive Systems Engineering: The Future for a Changing World," through CRC Press.

Some of Dr. Smith's current research interests include the design of distributed work systems, human-automation interaction, intelligent information systems, interactive critiquing systems, and representation aiding. Some of his most significant work, notably, has been in aviation. Working in collaboration with the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) industry collaborative decision-making program, Dr. Smith has been involved with many software and procedural changes with respect to how air traffic flow management systems presently work.

To prepare for his exemplary career, Dr. Smith studied at the University of Michigan, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in psychology in 1975. He subsequently resolved to study human factors engineering, combining the understanding of people with technology. Dr. Smith received a Master of Science in industrial and operations engineering on campus in 1976, followed by a Doctor of Philosophy in operations engineering and cognitive psychology in 1979.

A distinguished member of several professional organizations, Dr. Smith has been named as a fellow of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society. He is also a member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the IEEE Systems, Man and Cybernetics Society. Well regarded for his indelible contributions to the field, Dr. Smith has been recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the FAA's collaborative decision making program. He also earned the Hurley Award for research in collaborative decision making from the Air Traffic Control Association, a National Aviation Safety Award from the Airline Dispatchers Federation and the MacQuigg Award for Outstanding Teacher from OSU's college of engineering. Additionally, Dr. Smith received several Best Paper Awards for his contributions to Human Factors and Clinical Laboratory Science.
