Most recently he served Curtin University in Western Australia as the Head of the Department of Exploration Geophysics from 1990 to 2002 and the University of Houston as Assistant Professor between 1987 and 1989. He previously contributed for several years as a secondary school science and mathematics teacher before changing the trajectory of his career to institutions of higher learning.
Establishing and running the first University Department of Exploration Geophysics in the world was a highlight of Dr. Uren's career. Post-retirement, he served as a consultant in Western Australia. Demonstrating versatility in his field, he has published papers in both minerals and oil exploration. To prepare for his career, Dr. Uren pursued a formal education at the University of Western Australia, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in 1960, and a Diploma in Education in 1964. He subsequently received a Post Graduate Diploma in 1969 and a Master of Science in Applied Physics in 1974, both from the Western Australian Institute of Technology. After accruing several years in his field, Dr. Uren received a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Houston in 1989.
Dr. Uren became a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Physics, the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, a Certified Practicing Geologist and a Member of the Australian College of Education. He is also an active member of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (USA) and the Australian Society of Exploration Geophysicists. Dr. Uren was awarded an Honorary Life Membership of the Australian Society of Exploration Geophysicists in 1996. Attributing his professional success to his diligent work ethic and dedication to his profession, he is an avid Rugby Union enthusiast. He founded the W.A.I.T. Rugby Club in 1969, and is now a Life Member of it. He was named Sportsman of the Year by the Western Australian Institute of Technology in 1972, and is now also a member of the Western Force Rugby Club in Western Australia.
