Joseph L. Cavinato, PhD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Cavinato, PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. Accruing more than 45 years of expertise as a business educator, Dr. Cavinato retired in 2012 as a professor emeritus of supply chain management at the Thunderbird School of Global Management. Specializing in leadership and management education, the school is notably affiliated with Arizona State University in Phoenix. A distinguished professor on campus for more than a decade, some of Dr. Cavinato's achievements have included his oversight of the school's global supply chain leadership program and the establishment of a global supply chain leadership elective course for MBA students studying at the elite graduate business school.

Dr. Cavinato's renowned teaching career began at the University of Georgia in 1975. He subsequently maintained involvement for more than two decades at the Pennsylvania State University (PSU). During this time, Dr. Cavinato earned distinction as a professor of business logistics and was instrumental in forming an undergraduate purchasing course and an MBA elective course, as well as a purchasing and materials management executive program.

Dr. Cavinato was recruited by the Institute for Supply Management (ISM) in 1999, where he led the professional association as a senior vice-president and served as the founding executive director of its A.T. Kearney Center for Strategic Supply Leadership until 2002. A research-based organization, the Center is dedicated to recognizing and further developing individuals in the purchasing and supply field. Prior to his tenure in academia, Dr. Cavinato worked for Transportation Association of America in Washington, Chessie Railroad in Baltimore, Marketing Publications in Washington, D.C., and the Federal Maritime Commission.

An expert in the areas of strategic development, supply and value and business model analysis, business futures and international business, Dr. Cavinato conducted presentations and lectures in his field throughout North America, Latin America, Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Europe. He has conducted extensive research over the years as well, interviewing thousands of business professionals around the world regarding the many challenges and opportunities that their companies present. Moreover, Dr. Cavinato has also been known for his consulting efforts with various profit and nonprofit organizations and for his contributions on the boards of directors for companies like freightPro in Kansas City, Missouri, Pegasus International in South Africa and Ultra-Puro SA in Mexico.

A prolific author, Dr. Cavinato has authored and co-authored several books, including "Purchasing and Materials Management: Integrative Strategies," "Traffic Management: Planning, Operations, and Control," "Transportation Logistics Dictionary," "The Purchasing Handbook: A Guide for the Purchasing and Supply Professional" and "The Supply Management Handbook." He also served as an associate editor for the International Journal of Purchasing and Materials and for SupplyChain Digest. In addition, Dr. Cavinato has contributed over 200 articles to various other professional journals and industry magazines on such topics as purchasing and supply, logistics and transportation and corporate social responsibility.

Prior to embarking upon his professional journey, Dr. Cavinato pursued a formal education at American University. He received a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in business administration in 1966 and 1967, respectively. Dr. Cavinato later concluded his academic efforts with a Doctor of Philosophy in business at PSU in 1975. Eminently qualified in his field, he is a certified purchasing manager.

As a commitment to his field, Dr. Cavinato has been active with several pertinent organizations. He was the director of education of the American Society of Transportation and Logistics, a former vice chairperson of the academy planning committee and the conference committee vice chairperson of the National Association of Purchasing Management. Furthermore, he is a respected member of the Council of Logistics Management and the American Society of Quality Control. Invested in his community, Dr. Cavinato has been active with the Shavers Creek Birds of Prey Rehabilitation Center. He also volunteered as the chief of fire police for the Boalsburg Fire Department in Pennsylvania.

In 2012, Dr. Cavinato was presented with the prestigious Shipman Gold Medal from the ISM for his contributions to the field of supply management. He also received the A.T. Kearney Doctoral Dissertation Award for a study of multi-firm supply chain system total cost measurement systems, which is believed to be the first research ever conducted in supply chains. For his teachings, Dr. Cavinato earned Outstanding Teaching Awards from PSU, the University of Georgia and the Thunderbird School of Global Management. Additionally, he was named as the U.S. Transportation Man of the Year and Atlanta Transportation Man of the Year.
