Dr. Max Albert Listgarten earned the distinguished title of a professor emeritus of periodontics in the School of Dental Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in 2001.

Now retired from a long and successful career in dentistry and academia, Dr. Listgarten earned the distinguished title of a professor emeritus of periodontics in the School of Dental Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in 2001. Hired in 1968 as an associate professor, he advanced to become a full professor in just three years. Dr. Listgarten was also the chairperson of the department for eight years, beginning in 1984. He was a faculty member on campus for more than three decades. Relocating to California following his retirement, he decided to continue teaching in some capacity and served as a visiting professor at the University of California in San Francisco from 2001 until 2003. Dr. Listgarten subsequently enjoyed another two years as a clinical professor in the department of Stomatology until 2005.

Dr. Listgarten began his career in 1963 as a research associate at Harvard University. He returned to his alma mater, the University of Toronto, where he served as an Assistant and Associate Professor of periodontics between 1964 and 1968. Throughout his tenure in academia, Dr. Listgarten had the opportunity to serve abroad as a visiting professor at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden and the University of Berne in Switzerland. He was also a consultant for the National Institute of Dental Research, the Food and Drug Administration, the American Fund for Dental Research and the American Dental Association.

Renowned for his research in the structural biology of periodontal tissues, Dr. Listgarten was also instrumental in the development and structure of bacterial biofilms on teeth. As a seasoned researcher, he has disseminated many of his findings in over 250 scholarly articles, monographs, textbooks and book chapters. Dr. Listgarten has also been active on the editorial boards of several scholarly publications, including the Journal of Periodontal Research and the Journal of Clinical Periodontology. He was also a frequent speaker in his field.

Dr. Listgarten obtained a Doctor of Dental Science at the University of Toronto in 1959. He earned a certification in Periodontics from Harvard University in 1963. He also received an honorary Master of Arts from the University of Pennsylvania in 1971 and an honorary Doctorate from the University of Athens, Greece in 1993. During his career in Dental Medicine, Dr. Listgarten has been a respected member of the American Dental Association, as well as the International Association of Dental Research, who honored him with an Award for Basic Research in Periodontology in 1973. The American Academy of Periodontology, selected him for its Clinical Research Award in 1987. Most notably, he is an elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a past president of the American Association for Dental Research.

Dr. Listgarten has been the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions for his contributions to the field of Periodontology, including from the William J. Gies Foundation in 1981. He was also the recipient of a Distinguished Alumnus Award from Harvard University in 1986. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Listgarten has been featured in the 45th through 59th editions of Who's Who in America, as well as the first edition of Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare.
