Ms. Tharp, from Lorain, Ohio, is renowned as an entrepreneur, data, tax and accounting specialist with more than 30 years of excellence in her fields. She married Michael A. Tharp on March 3, 1983, and has 3 children, Tiffany Marie Wise, Christopher Ross Tharp, and Katherine Mae Tharp as well as grandchildren, Celene, Carissa, Aedric, Annalise and James. A gifted student, Jean was in the top 5% of her class and a member of the National Honor Society at Lorain High School. She went on to attend The Ohio State University where she was a National Merit Scholar. Jean graduated in 1976 with a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science and a minor in Genetics. An additional Associate of Applied Science degree in Veterinary Technology from Columbus State Community College in 1979 allowed her to use her skills in the areas of ovarian cancer research and Toxic Shock Syndrome. In 1982, Ms. Tharp returned to Columbus State Community College to complete courses in Business Data Processing and Programming. Those skills were utilized when she reprogrammed an entire mortgage and banking system for a local community bank.
Ms. Tharp's inaugural foray into business ownership was Orderly Manor Cleaning Services, established in April 1989. She would continue to operate the aforementioned business in addition to beginning her work in the tax services sector. Since 1991, Jean has flourished as the owner and principal tax specialist at JRTharp Tax Services, LLC. Her business expertise includes bookkeeping, personal and business taxes, including corporations and non-profits, rental properties, settling tax debts, levies and liens. She also assists other tax professionals during tax season. Additionally, from 2008 -2010and 2012-2015, Jean worked as a Regulatory Project Specialist for TEKSystems at Verizon Wireless. She was responsible for procuring Federal, State and Local approval so cell towers could be built or modified in Ohio, Northern West Virginia and around Pittsburgh. As a dedicated tax professional, Ms. Tharp is a member of the National Association of Tax Preparers.
A lifelong bowling enthusiast, Ms. Tharp served as editor and Chief Financial Officer for The American Bowler news magazine from 2007 to 2013. It became the largest bowling newspaperin the country, spanning over 8 states and even featured other countries like Ukraine. Passionate about advancing the status of the sport and opportunities for women in bowling, she remains active in the United States Bowling Congress and Central Ohio Women's Bowling Association. Jean has held many league offices, participates in many tournaments, won the 2000 Columbus Women's City Tournament and is Vice President of the Columbus Women's 600 Club. Ms. Tharp's dedication to creating opportunities for girls and women extends to her community efforts with the Girl Scouts of America where she served as a local troop leader, cookie mom and volunteer.
