Dr. Attiyeh, Professor of Economics Emeritus at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), retired from his position in 2006, having garnered a laudable reputation for more than three decades in his role. Having begun his career at the university in 1967 as an Associate Professor, he also enjoyed the opportunity to serve as the Vice Chancellor for Research, Dean of Graduate Studies, Chair of the Department of Economics and Interim Senior Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs. Since retiring, Dr. Attiyeh notably spent several years as President of UCSD's Emeriti Association and as Chair of the Council of University of California Emeriti Associations.

Early on in his career, Dr. Attiyeh was a staff economist for the President Kennedy's Council of Economic Advisers from 1961 to 1962. He was then recruited by Stanford University as an Assistant Professor of Economics before returning to Yale University to complete his doctoral dissertation. Dr. Attiyeh was subsequently hired as an Assistant Professor at Yale and as a Research Economist at the Cowles Foundation for Research in Economics, an economic research institute at Yale. Shortly thereafter, one of his dissertation advisors, who had been hired as Chair of the Department of Economics by UCSD, recruited Dr. Attiyeh to UCSD where he remained for the duration of his academic career.

While teaching at UCSD, Dr. Attiyeh had the opportunity to serve as the research director of the Economics Education Project at the Esmee Fairbairn Research Centre at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland, from 1969 to 1972. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed articles, books and textbooks on economics, economics education, and graduate education. Moreover, some of Dr. Attiyeh's civic endeavors have involved chairing the Council of Graduate Schools, a nonprofit higher education organization that seeks to advance graduate education and research. He was also active as a member and former chairperson of the Graduate Record Examination Board.

Dr. Attiyeh earned a Bachelor of Arts at Williams College in 1958 and a Doctor of Philosophy at Yale University in 1966. As a respected member of several pertinent organizations, Dr. Attiyeh is a past president of the Association of Graduate Schools, a former board chairperson of the California Biomedical Research Association and the former treasurer of the California Society for Biomedical Research. He is also a member of the American Economics Association.
