As a research scientist, Dr. Spontak's primary research interests have focused on the phase behavior and morphology/ property development of nanostructured polymers, polymer nanocomposites, electron microscopy and stimuli-responsive media. He has notably pioneered the development of transmission electron microtomography to study the 3D characteristics of nanoscale polymer morphologies and computational methodologies for detailed analysis of molecular topologies in thermoplastic elastomers. Looking toward the future, Dr. Spontak anticipates conducting additional antimicrobial work to expand the applicability of his recent discovery, which demonstrated the first anionic polymers capable of fully inactivating a broad range of infectious microbes (including MRSA, C. difficile and SARS-CoV-2) in about 5 minutes.

Dr. Spontak has disseminated his research findings by authoring nearly 300 peer-reviewed articles in scientific journals. His publications have been cited over 13,000 times. He has also contributed numerous monographs and 35 book chapters in his area of expertise, and has served on numerous editorial advisory boards for several significant journals, such as Macromolecules, Langmuir, Macromolecular Rapid Communications, and Materials.
