At a young age, Dr. Stewart decided that he wanted to become a physician. While earning his undergraduate degree, he conducted research with a friend whose father was a surgeon, which initially piqued his interest in the field. Dr. Stewart continued to shadow thoracic surgeons before embarking on his own professional path.
Dr. Stewart obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Chemistry and Spanish from DePauw University and a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Colorado. He completed an internship and residency in general surgery at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and a residency in cardiothoracic surgery at Vanderbilt University. Moreover, Dr. Stewart has been certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.
Dr. Stewart began his career as a surgeon at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, achieving tenure in 1994. He worked at Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs for many years. He currently excels as the chief of thoracic surgery at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine and the Kansas City VA Medical Center. Dr. Stewart has also offered his expertise to the field as a teacher of residents and medical students.
Notably Dr. Stewart was honored among Top Cardio-Thoracic Surgeons in the Country in 2006. He has attributed his professional success to the support and love of his patients over the years. He maintains his professional affiliation with the American College of Surgeons, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the Western Thoracic Surgical Association and the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association. Looking toward the future, Dr. Stewart plans to retire in the coming years while fishing, golfing, and biking in his spare time.
