Ms. Hargreaves-Fitzsimmons is a multi-talented artist and illustrator who began learning how to draw and paint when she was just a child. While attending high school, she continued to practice her diverse talents and, although she took many art classes in college, she focused on sociology and anthropology. After graduating, Ms. Hargreaves-Fitzsimmons was employed as a guidance counselor for the Michigan State Employment Commission in Detroit from 1969 to 1973. She subsequently met her future husband and the two eventually relocated to Japan for his teaching career. While living in Japan, Ms. Hargreaves began pursuing her passion once again and learned much about the Japanese style of painting, which she has been practicing ever since.
Presently, Ms. Hargreaves-Fitzsimmons is the owner and art director of Katydid Productions in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Throughout the course of her career, she has also been involved in academia, teaching various courses at her alma mater, Oakland University in Michigan, as well as at Corpus Christi College in Texas, Oxford University in England and the Center for Creative Studies in Detroit. Well regarded for her contributions, Ms. Hargreaves-Fitzsimmons has received recognition for her work at various shows in Japan. She was also featured in a local newspaper in Pasatiempo, California, in 1995.
Influenced by famous artists from centuries ago, Ms. Hargreaves-Fitzsimmons' works have been featured in multiple one-woman and two-woman shows throughout Tokyo, Santa Fe and the state of Michigan. Her artwork has also been featured at group exhibitions at such locations as the Ann Arbor Art Association Show, the Detroit Institute of Arts Rental Gallery and the Hand Artes Gallery in New Mexico. Much of Ms. Hargreaves-Fitzsimmons' work is focused on Japanese ink painting, which she has been practicing and teaching since the 1960s. She also paints some of the beautiful landscapes, animals and, on occasion, people she discovers throughout New Mexico.
Ms. Hargreaves-Fitzsimmons notably co-authored a book with her late husband, Thomas Fitzsimmons, a former editor, feature writer, poet and teacher who taught at several universities throughout Japan and Europe. The first book, "Water Ground Stone," which was published in 1993, is a compilation of stories, poems, essays and oriental ink-brush paintings that she created while living in Japan. She also co-authored "In the Cemetery There" with her husband and was the illustrator for several of his other books, including "High Desert/High Country Seeds," "Demented Flute: Selected Poems, 1967-1986" and "Stages and Views." Furthermore, Ms. Hargreaves-Fitzsimmons was the designer and illustrator for 40 other Japanese, European, Bengali and American books of poetry throughout her career.
Prior to embarking upon her professional journey, Ms. Hargreaves-Fitzsimmons attended Oakland University, where she attained a Bachelor of Arts in 1967. Continuing her education, she subsequently earned a Master of Arts at the University of Michigan in 1971. Throughout the course of her career, Ms. Hargreaves-Fitzsimmons drew from the indelible influence of centuries-old Japanese artists in developing her craft.
