Dr. Alpert is an esteemed cardiologist and professor of medicine at the University of Arizona Sarver Heart Center. He is also currently the medical director of the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program since 2009, he formerly served as the director of coronary care between 2009 and 2014 and as a Robert W. and Irene P. Flinn professor and Chief of Medicine from 1992 until 2006. Dr. Alpert's administrative roles notably included working as the assistant to the dean of the college of medicine and as noted above the chairperson of the department of medicine.

A U.S. Navy veteran, Dr. Alpert's career began to take shape as a staff cardiologist and director of the Naval Regional Medical Center's coronary care unit in San Diego, as an assistant clinical professor of medicine at the University of California in San Diego and as an assistant professor of medicine and director of the Samuel A. Levine cardiac unit at Harvard University's Peter Bent Brigham Hospital. He was subsequently recruited by the University of Massachusetts Medical School in 1978, where he enjoyed a tenured position as a professor and director of the division of cardiovascular medicine. Dr. Alpert was later named as the Edward Budnitz professor of cardiovascular medicine and vice chairperson of the department of medicine.

In addition to his clinical and teaching appointments, Dr. Alpert has provided his expertise as a consultant to the West Roxbury VA Hospital in Boston and the VA Medical Center. He also excelled as the Tucson secretary, treasurer and president of the medical staff of the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. Additionally, Dr. Alpert was active on the board of directors of the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Dr. Alpert is renowned for his work in the development of a universal definition of myocardial infarction, which is best known as a heart attack. A prolific writer, he has written and edited over 50 medical textbooks and monographs, including "The Heart Attack Handbook" in 1978, "Cardiovascular Physiopathology" in 1984, "Intensive Care Medicine" in 1985, "Diagnostic Atlas of the Heart" in 1994 and "Primary Care of Native American Patients" in 1999. Dr. Alpert has also contributed over 600 editorials, reviews and book chapters, as well as over 200 scholarly articles and over 100 abstracts, and has served in editorial roles for numerous scholarly journals. He has found success as the editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Medicine since 2005 and remains active as an editorial board member for several other journals, including the American Journal of Cardiology and the International Journal of Cardiology.

Pursuing a formal education at Yale University, Dr. Alpert acquired a Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude, in 1963, after which he attained a Doctor of Medicine, cum laude, at the prestigious Harvard University in 1969. Additional educational pursuits to his credit include an internship, residency in internal medicine and fellowship in cardiovascular disease at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital between 1969 and 1974. Dr. Alpert then served for two years as a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy. He is board certified in internal medicine and cardiovascular disease through the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Dr. Alpert's professional endeavors include membership with several pertinent organizations. He is a Master of the American College of Physicians, as well as a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, where he served in various roles and was named as a Gifted Teacher of the Year in 2004. The award recognized his significant contributions to cardiovascular education and the training of professionals in cardiovascular disease. Dr. Alpert is also a Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology, and the American College of Chest Physicians, and the American Heart Association, where he received in 2001 the Distinguished Achievement Award. He is an honorary member of the Danish Cardiology Association, the Argentine Cardiology Society and the Israeli Heart Society.

As a testament to his success and longevity, Dr. Alpert has received several awards, including a Gold Medal from the University of Copenhagen for excellence in scientific thesis in 1968, an Edward Rhodes Stitt Award from the San Diego Naval Hospital in 1976 and the George W. Thorn Award from the Peter Bent Bingham Hospital in 1977. He was also bestowed with multiple Outstanding Teacher Awards from the University of Massachusetts Medical School, the University of Arizona College of Medicine and the University of Miami School of Medicine, as well as several fellowships from the National Institutes of Health and other organizations. Further, Dr. Alpert has been listed among the Best Doctors in America for 2013 and 2014.
