Kim Opperman Celebrated for Dedication to U.S. Service Members

Ms. Opperman obtained 501C3 status for Socks for Soldiers in 2007

COLUMBUS, OH, September 14, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Kim Opperman has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

A dedicated community advocate, Ms. Opperman was a para-professional and a tutor for students with multiple disabilities, until she retired in 2018. Her original goal was to finish a teaching degree, but was given a higher calling to serve America in a greater way as CEO of her organization, Socks for Soldiers, Inc. The actively growing non profit charity, which primarily operates on the internet, now boasts 2,500 volunteers around the world. A year after its inception in 2006 as an incorporated company, Socks for Soldiers, Inc. acquired 501C3 status. Kim designed the military sock and cap knitting pattern and custom created the first professionally made military yarn in bulk, based on her exact specifications and military standards. It was critical to the success of the organization to have a ready supply of appropriate yarn in authentic military colors for the organization's knitters. This "all season superwash wool" was a vast improvement on the war time wool of former days.

A former student of OSU and North Central College in Mansfield, Ohio, Ms. Opperman has been honored many times over the years for her outstanding accomplishments. In addition to being one of three finalists for the Microsoft Above and Beyond Award in 2007, she was nominated for the L'Oréal of Paris Women of Worth Award. Likewise, she was commended by the Governor of the state of Ohio in 2008. The following year, Vogue Knitting, Knitting Simple and dozens of other newspapers and magazines endorsed Ms. Opperman for her work with Socks for Soldiers. She was most recently featured in Country Woman magazine, in a story titled, "Sergeant at Yarns." Additionally, Ms. Opperman has served as a motivational speaker to inspire patriotic service to the next generation of Americans.

Over the years, she applied her entrepreneurial talents as the owner of a gourmet bakery, then as a chef, and pastry chef with the Westbrook Country Club. She also prepared meals and baked for three U.S. Presidents and other people of notoriety. Kim created a designer line of hand crafted gourmet bagels in thirty seven flavors, and created the prototype for the McDonald's restaurant chain. Though they eventually replaced her gourmet bagels with budget bagels, the bagels continue to be a popular menu item. She was asked to compete and won first place in three categories in a fundraising event with all of Ohio's top chefs, to produce donations for the Miss Ohio Pageant.

Ms. Opperman is an author, with several articles published, plus several books she is presently writing. She will continue inspirational speaking to schools, clubs, and churches when requested. Looking toward the future, Ms. Opperman, also known as Sarge, continues to be actively involved in the daily operations of Socks for Soldiers, Inc, and is enjoying the continued success of her charitable organization. Though she believes that serving God and country is a life long goal, she is fully committed to enjoying more time with her adult children and grandchildren in between writing and knitting socks.
