Dr. Aoki is a researcher, educator and diabetes expert with a career spanning nearly four decades of clinical and academic excellence. An alumni of Shinshu University, he earned a Doctor of Medicine in 1981, and began his professional journey in the department of internal medicine at the Japanese Red Cross Suwa Hospital the following year. Throughout the 1980s, Dr. Aoki remained affiliated with the department of internal medicine at Shinshu University, where he had begun doctoral coursework. During this time, he accepted posts at National Matsumoto Hospital and the Japanese Red Cross Nagano Hospital, where he would serve for a year.

In the early 1990s, Dr. Aoki shifted toward a deeper focus on diabetes and endocrinology, earning board certification from the Japanese Society of Internal Medicine in 1991 and a diabetologist distinction from the Japan Diabetes Society in 1992. Following this accomplishment, he was bestowed with a Doctor of Philosophy from Shinshu University in 1993, and accepted a prestigious fellowship in nephrology at the Georgetown University Medical Center, where he would conduct research for the next two years. Upon his return to Japan in 1995, Dr. Aoki was named as an assistant professor in the second department of internal medicine at Shinshu University.

Dr. Aoki advanced to become the head of the department of internal medicine of the National Hospital Organization Matsumoto Medical Center in 2003, a position he would hold until 2018. During his time there, he assumed several other administrative leadership roles, including as the director of the outpatient department, head of the lifestyle disease laboratory and head of the hospital's clinical research center. From 2013 until 2018, Dr. Aoki would additionally serve as a visiting clinical professor at the Matsumoto Dental University Hospital. After stepping down from his administrative responsibilities in 2018, Dr. Aoki found success as a professor at the Matsumoto University Graduate School of Health Science, where he continues to teach and research.

Throughout the length of his career, Dr. Aoki has contributed to more than 40 scientific papers and articles for publication in international journals. His research is primarily concerned with topics in diabetes management and gerontology, with recent work including studies on carbohydrate restriction in Type 2 diabetes patients and lifestyle studies of Japanese centenarians. Well regarded for these efforts, Dr. Aoki was certified as an Anti-Aging Medicine Specialist in 2015 and, in 2017, became a councilor of the Japanese Society of Anti-Aging Medicine. He has been the recipient of numerous grants and accolades for his research innovation, including a 1995 Mamie Dowd Eisenhower Memorial Fellowship from the American Heart Association, and a 2020 International Research Leadership Award for Innovative Research in Internal Medicine.

Dr. Aoki credits his professional success to a desire to investigate the truths of life and human biology, as well as an abiding desire to apply those lessons to patient care. Furthermore, he benefited greatly from the mentorship of Professor Seiichi Furuta, who helped guide him toward clinical research. As an internationally recognized expert in his field, Dr. Aoki is a member of numerous professional organizations, including the Japan Diabetes Society, the Japan Society of Gene Therapy, the Japanese Cancer Association and the Japanese Society of Anti-Aging Medicine, among others.
