Mr. Hughes distinguished himself for more than three decades in the field of nuclear and chemical engineering prior to his retirement in 2016. Gaining recognition over the years, he held various positions with DuPont and Westinghouse, as well as with Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, LLC at the U.S. Department of Energy Savannah River Site nuclear facility in Aiken, South Carolina. Throughout the course of his career, Mr. Hughes earned roles of advancing responsibility, including engineering and management positions in chemical operations, environmental compliance, and hazardous/nuclear material transportation. He was responsible for the successful development of regulatory compliance systems at several Department of Energy nuclear facilities. Later in his career he was responsible for the recruiting, hiring, and training of the next generation of engineering talent for the company.
Growing up in a family of engineers, Mr. Hughes made the decision to follow a similar path, excelling in mathematics and the sciences. Attending Lehigh University after high school, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering in 1987. He later completed a Master of Business Administration, with a concentration in finance and operations management, at the University of South Carolina in 1996. He is a certified hazardous and nuclear material shipper through the Department of Transportation.
Mr. Hughes' professional affiliations include the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, Tau Beta Pi, Beta Gamma Sigma, the Contractors Transportation Management Association, and Delta Phi Fraternity. Looking toward the future, Mr. Hughes plans to enjoy traveling with his wife Laura, and reading/writing on two topics close to his heart; his faith in God and love of America.
