Laura Sclafani was honored as a Super Lawyers Rising Star for 2020 and 2021.

Ms. Sclafani is an esteemed attorney with nearly a decade of expertise in child and family law, including divorce, custody, child support, and domestic violence cases, among other things. Her interest in the law began while she was an undergraduate student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she was a political science major and became heavily involved in the 2008 Barack Obama presidential campaign. Planning to attend law school thereafter, she served as an AmeriCorps fellow for a year after college, leading to the realization that one of the most effective ways to create positive social change was to expand access to legal resources for all. After earning a Bachelor of Arts from UNC in 2009, Ms. Sclafani enrolled at the Emory University School of Law.
During law school, Ms. Sclafani pursued her interest in family and child law through legal internships with the Barton Child Law and Policy Center, Children's Law Center of Central North Carolina, Voices for Georgia's Children, and Georgia Legal Services Program. At Emory Law, she was awarded the Clinical Legal Education Association Award for Outstanding Clinical Student, a Pro Bono medal, and received an Emory Summer Child Advocacy Program grant. After graduating from Emory Law in May 2013, she joined Atlanta Legal Aid Society as a staff attorney, where she gained extensive litigation experience representing and advising low-income clients in all areas of family and domestic law. In 2018, Ms. Sclafani left Atlanta Legal Aid Society to accept a position as an associate at Smith & Files, LLC, a preeminent metro-Atlanta family law firm, led by Dawn Smith, Esq. who is a member of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and has been consistently rated in the Top 50 Women: Georgia Super Lawyers, and Kristen Files Esq. who has been consistently named as a Super Lawyers Rising Star in Georgia. Ms. Sclafani remains in practice at Smith & Files, a law firm dedicated to excellent and compassionate representation in the field of family law.
As a part of her commitment to equity in access to representation, Ms. Sclafani regularly provides pro bono representation to low-income clients across metro-Atlanta through Atlanta Legal Aid Society, Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation, and DeKalb Volunteer Lawyers Foundation. She also remains active in training attorneys to provide competent and compassionate representation in pro bono transgender name change cases and case law updates. She further helped to establish the first Fulton County domestic violence court watch program as a part of a local task force, and serves on the Atlanta Legal Aid Service Council and as a board member on the Atlanta Bar Association Council of Younger Lawyers. In recognition of her outstanding early-career record of practice, she was honored as a Super Lawyers Rising Star for 2020 and 2021. Looking toward the future, Ms. Sclafani hopes to continue refining her legal skills with the eventual goal of advancing into policy and appeals work.
