EDINBURG, TX, September 16, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Thomas Pozorski has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
While studying at Harvard University, Dr. Pozorski completed an archaeology course in South America under the tutelage of Professor Michael Moseley. In this class he met his future wife, Shelia Pozorski, with whom he has shared his life and career pursuits up to the present. They both graduated from Harvard in 1971 and later earned their Ph.D.s in anthropology at the University of Texas at Austin in 1976.
During the 1970s, he and Shelia worked on various archaeological projects in the Moche Valley, Peru and later had positions at both Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh and the University of Denver before arriving at the University of Texas Pan American in Edinburg, Texas in 1986. There they continued to pursue careers in anthropology and education, serving as professors of anthropology between 1986 and 2015. For nearly 30 years, Dr. Pozorski taught three or four courses per semester while also conducting research and archaeological fieldwork during the summer. He was especially pleased whenever he witnessed the metaphorical 'lightbulb' go off in the heads of his students when they grasped a difficult concept.
In 2015, Dr. Pozorski retired from teaching and accepted the designation of professor emeritus of anthropology at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, the new name for his former university. In a career filled with highlights, he is especially proud of the excavations that he has been a part of in the Casma Valley on the north coast of Peru over the course of 40 years. Through the clearing of large architectural areas and the remains of monumental mud friezes and sculptures dating to 1500 B.C., he and Shelia Pozorski have been instrumental in gaining new insights into current understanding of early prehistoric civilization along the coast of Peru.
He remains aware of ongoing changes in the field of archaeology through his alignment with the Society for American Archeology. With a plethora of knowledge to his credit, he has authored and co-authored several articles in professional journals, as well as a book titled "Early Settlement and Subsistence in the Casma Valley, Peru." In light of his outstanding body of work, he received several research grants through the National Science Foundation, two Chancellor Teaching Awards and a University Research Award, for which he was nominated by his peers. In the coming years, Dr. Pozorski aims to continue conducting fieldwork and writing up the results of those excavations as articles for archeological journals and as monographs.
