Dr. Ono is a board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon, professor and chairperson of the department of cardiovascular surgery at the University of Tokyo. He is best known as a pioneer in the implantation of ventricular support devices in patients with congestive heart failure, and much of his clinical work is focused on patients with advanced heart disease and transplant surgeries. Dr. Ono earned a Doctor of Medicine at the University of Tokyo in 1987, completing an internship at the University of Tokyo Hospital and a general residency at the Social Insurance Central General Hospital before pursuing an additional residency in cardiothoracic surgery in 1990. He was a clinical fellow in cardiothoracic surgery at Kyorin University Hospital until 1993, whereupon he returned to the University of Tokyo to begin doctoral coursework. Dr. Ono was awarded with a Doctor of Philosophy in 1998.
The following year, Dr. Ono accepted a prestigious two-year fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at the Ohio State University. He would begin his teaching career in 2001 at the University of Tokyo, rising to become a full professor and the chair of the cardiovascular surgery department in 2009. He was named in 2013 as the director of the Cooperative Unit of Medicine and Engineering Research. Since 2017, Dr. Ono has also been a professor in the University of Tokyo's Research Institute for Biomedical Science and Engineering, and he currently serves as the chair of the school's department of surgery.
Dr. Ono has published more than 300 scientific papers in English and 250 in Japanese, and has served on the editorial board of more than a dozen journals, including the Journal of Cardiology and the International Heart Journal. He serves on the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare's heart transplantation system working group and organ transplantation committee, and consults for numerous surgical device manufacturers and hospital ethics and procedural committees. Throughout the course of his career, Dr. Ono's commitment to the development of cardiac surgery and care has been recognized with numerous accolades, including a 2008 award from the Annual Scientific Meeting of the Japanese Association for Thoracic Surgery, a Japanese Society for Cardiovascular Surgery Award and the 2019 AATS Graham Foundation Excellence Award. He maintains involvement with various professional organizations, and serves on the board of the Japan Surgical Society, the Japanese College of Cardiology, the Japanese Society for Cardiovascular Surgery, the Japanese Society for Transplantation and the Japanese Association for Thoracic Surgery, among others. A devout Buddhist, Dr. Ono draws inspiration from the work of Disaku Ikeda, as well as from his innate desire to help save lives through the medium of medical technology.
