David Browning has been presented with numerous accolades in recognition of his groundbreaking work in underwater acoustics and aquatic sound absorption.

Mr. Browning is an esteemed physicist and research scientist celebrating more than 50 years of innovation in low-frequency and underwater acoustics. A gifted student, his interest in acoustics began with a high school physics class, which led him to the University of Rhode Island. Eventually graduating with a Bachelor of Science in 1958, Mr. Browning subsequently earned a Master of Science at Michigan State University in 1961, where he began his initial study of underwater acoustics, merging a lifelong love for the ocean with his academic interest in sound.
In 1965, Mr. Browning began a nearly 30 year career as a physicist for the Naval Underwater Warfare Center in New London, Connecticut. During this time, he conducted significant research in sound attenuation in bodies of water including the Red Sea, Lake Tanganyika and Hudson Bay, and amassed data that was utilized in further experiments in identifying currents and composition based on frequency attenuation and defense applications of these observations. During the 1970s, Mr. Browning's research attracted attention internationally, and he was invited to the Defence Science Establishment in Auckland, New Zealand, the Naval Postgraduate School and the Defence Research Establishment in Victoria, British Columbia.
From 1989 until 1991, Mr. Browning was affiliated with the University of Connecticut as a research scientist. He departed from the Naval Underwater Warfare Center in 1994 to accept an adjunct faculty position at the University of Rhode Island, with which he taught until receiving emeritus status in 2016. While retired from teaching, Mr. Browning has consulted for Browning Biotech since 2016, and remains active in numerous professional associations, including the American Physical Society, the Canada Acoustical Society and the American Geophysical Union.
Mr. Browning was designated as a fellow of the American Acoustical Society, and has been presented with numerous accolades in recognition of his groundbreaking work in underwater acoustics and aquatic sound absorption. He was honored as the Naval Undersea Warfare Center's 1988 Scientist of the Year following the publication of his research observing and codifying a theory of low-frequency sound attenuation, and was presented with a 1994 Naval Undersea Warfare Center Decibel and Sonar Bow Awards. He continues to publish and conduct independent research in acoustics, with recent interests including animal vocalization as well as the effects of climate change and pollution on sound transmission and absorption. In his retirement, Mr. Browning enjoys dedicating his time to sailing and gardening.
