Inspired by several other members of his family, who were also police officers, Mr. Russo had always wanted to pursue a career in law enforcement. He subsequently worked as an investigator in the New York Police Department for more than 20 years. For nearly 15 years, he has served as lieutenant in the aforementioned department.

For his efforts as a law enforcement officer, Mr. Russo has accrued several accolades over the years. He was notably presented with an Commendation Medal from the New York City Council, the Man of the Year Award from the Retired Detectives Association of New York, the Hometown Heroes Award from the Daily News, the Police Officer of the Month Award and the Detective of the Year Award. Throughout his career, Mr. Russo has been incredibly proud of the extensive work that he conducted especially during the investigation into the murder of Karina Vetrano.

Mr. Russo has attributed his professional success to his exceptional upbringing and work ethic. He maintains his professional affiliation with the Columbia Association and the Concerned Long Island Mountain Bikers.
