Having earned the distinguished title of a professor emeritus of petroleum and natural gas engineering, Dr. Ertekin began his career at Pennsylvania State University (PSU) in 1975, shortly before receiving his doctorate degree on campus. A research and teaching assistant for three years, he continually progressed to a full professor and chaired the Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering Program from 1984 to 2014 without interruption for 30 years. He was the co-director of the Institute of Natural Gas Research on campus from 2013 to 2014. Additionally, Dr. Ertekin helmed the John and Willie Leone family Department of Energy and Mineral Engineering and served in the capacity of the George E. Trimble Chair of Earth and Mineral Sciences from 2013 until his retirement in 2017. A native of Turkey, he formerly spent five years as a research and teaching assistant and instructor of petroleum engineering at his alma mater, Middle East Technical University (METU), in Ankara before being recruited by PSU.
Throughout his incredible teaching career, Dr. Ertekin taught multiple graduate and undergraduate level courses in fluid flow dynamics in porous media. He was also instrumental in directing graduate research work in reservoir modeling and reservoir engineering. As a seasoned scientist, he had become widely recognized for his contributions to the advancement and application of fluid flow models in porous media, as well as the mathematical modeling of flow problems. Dr. Ertekin directed/co-directed 110 M.S thesis studies and 58 Ph.D. dissertations to completion. Apart from his recent academic and research commitments, Dr. Ertekin continues to maintain his own consulting company, Turgay Ertekin Engineering Consultant, in State College, Pennsylvania. Established in 1978, his firm specializes in petroleum and natural gas engineering services.
Dr. Ertekin has disseminated many of his research findings by authoring and co-authoring over 350 scholarly articles in professional journals and conference proceedings. Likewise, he has served on the editorial boards and as the executive editor of several journals, as well as the editor-in-chief for the Journal of Petroleum Exploration and Technology. He has contributed numerous chapters to five books and is the co-author/author of seven books, including "Basic Applied Reservoir Simulation" and "Reservoir Simulation: Problems and Solutions." As a presenter in his field, Dr. Ertekin has spoken on topics regarding petroleum and natural gas engineering. He has also been a frequent speaker at more than 350 invited lectures and seminars, and has conducted 40 workshops and short-courses across 30 countries.
To support his incredible career, Dr. Ertekin has been active with several national and international industry-related organizations, including the New York Academy of Sciences, the Chamber of Petroleum Engineers of Turkey, the American Society of Engineering Education and the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics. He is also a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers, where he has served as the chairperson of several committees between 1974 and 2003. Dr. Ertekin received both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in petroleum engineering at METU in 1969 and 1971, respectively. He later earned a Doctor of Philosophy in petroleum engineering at PSU in 1978.
As a testament to his professional success, Dr. Ertekin has been recognized with many awards. In addition to receiving the C. Drew Stahl Distinguished Achievement Award in Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering in 2019, he was bestowed with the Charles L. Hosler Alumni Scholar Medal in 2019 from Penn State. Also, within Penn State University, he has received a number of teaching, research and service awards including the Matthew J. and Anne C. Wilson Outstanding Teaching Award (April 1982), the Quentin E. and Louise L. Wood Faculty Fellow Recognition (1990-2001), Pennsylvania State University Graduate Faculty Teaching Award (April 1995), the Matthew J. and Anne C. Wilson Outstanding Service Award (May 1999), the George E. Trimble Chair in Earth and Mineral Sciences Recognition (2001- 2017), the Matthew J. and Anne C. Wilson Award for Excellence in Research (April 2004), the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences "Faculty Mentoring Award" (April 2009). Among his countless recognitions, Dr. Ertekin was also presented with the Nobel Laureate Physicist Kapitsa Gold Medal from the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences in 2013. Society of Petroleum Engineers has recognized Ertekin's professional achievements by awarding him the Distinguished Achievement Award for Petroleum Engineering Faculty (September 1998), the Lester C. Uren Award for Distinguished Achievement in the Technology of Petroleum Engineering (October 2001), the Distinguished Member Award (October 2001), the Society of Petroleum Engineers Distinguished Lecturer Award (September 2004 – May 2005), and the SPE/AIME Honorary Membership Award (October 2013).
