Jacobs with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. Now a professor and chair emeritus in the department of art and art history at Colorado State University (CSU), Dr. Jacobs enjoyed a tenured position on campus that spanned nearly four decades. An expert in northwest coast tribes, he taught various courses, such as Native American Art and Material Culture as well as studio classes until his retirement in 2009, and additionally served as a department chairperson, university mediator and faculty advisor to the women's ice hockey team. Most notably, however, Dr. Jacobs presided over an extensive exhibition program and visiting artists program between 1980 and 1986, which included artists such as Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, Red Grooms, Christo, Willem de Kooning, Sam Francis, and others. He previously held teaching appointments as a professor of art and department chairperson at the University of Wyoming, Central Michigan University, Northern Arizona University and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, as well as an assistant professor of art education at his alma mater, State University of New York at New Paltz (SUNY). Dr. Jacobs served as a visiting professor at Guangxi Normal University in China during 2001.
In 1998 Dr. Jacobs sailed around the world on the faculty of the Semester at Sea program. Each summer between 1980 and 2000 he lectured on educational cruise ships sailing from Vancouver, Canada to Alaska. At Colorado State University he taught a variety of studio courses in addition to Native American art and culture classes. In a career suffused with highlights, he is most proud of his role as the founder and first presiding officer of the National Council of Art Administrators, an important professional academic organization that will be celebrating its semi-centennial in 2022.
A talented artist, Dr. Jacobs' work has been featured in over 70 one-man shows at universities and galleries across 14 U.S. states. He has also been included in exhibitions throughout the world in countries like Italy, India and Bulgaria. In 2016, Dr. Jacobs was grateful when a sculpture of his, which memorialized a Japanese-American internment camp in northern Wyoming, was selected for the permanent collection at the Whitney Western Art Museum, Buffalo Bill Historic Center, in Cody, Wyoming.
Dr. Jacobs received a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science at SUNY in 1960 and 1962. He later attained a Doctor of Education at Peabody College, Vanderbilt University in 1965. Well regarded for his involvement in the Native American community for many years, Dr. Jacobs recently donated approximately 900 books about Native American art and culture to the Ute Mountain Ute tribe in southern Colorado. He was later acknowledged with a specially created piece of traditional pottery from the tribe as a symbol of their appreciation.
To support his academic and artistic career, Dr. Jacobs has been a member of the College of Art Association and the Native American Art Study Association. He is also affiliated with the One-West Contemporary Art Center, now Fort Collins Museum of Art, where he has served on the artist advisory council, The Douglas Society, a support organization for the Native Arts Department at the Denver Art Museum, where he served as past president and board member, where he served as the president and a board director. Furthermore, Dr. Jacobs is a member of the Northern Colorado Intertribal Pow-Wow Association for the past 26 years, and was on the board of directors of Nightwalker Enterprises in Fort Collins, a nonprofit organization established to promote education among Native Americans to support American tribes in western states.
Dr. Jacobs was a Fulbright scholar to India between 1981 and 1982. In recognition of his work, he was named as the Art Educator of the Year in High Education by the Colorado Art Education Association in 2007 and Art Educator of the Year for the Pacific Region by the National Art Education Association in 2008. The following year, Dr. Jacobs was also named as an Alumnus of the Year by SUNY-New Paltz in 2009.
