Mr. Defourny is a research metallurgist and civil engineer specializing in the testing and development of industrial applications for steel and other metals. As graduate of the University of Liege, he is trained in physics and civil engineering, and holds European and International Welding Engineer certificates, as well as numerous ISO Quality Assurance credentials. Mr. Defourny has served as an advisor and legal expert for numerous court cases and industry groups, and is certified as an expert by the European Commission for Research Projects Evaluation.
Mr. Defourny's career began in 1974 as an engineer in the application of metals department of the Centre for Metallurgical Research, rising to become the assistant department head in 1985. After being named as the department head in 1987, he continued to demonstrate excellence in management and engineering, becoming the manager of technology support for the Centre's Small and Medium Enterprises division and taking on the responsibilities of laboratory quality assurance manager. Mr. Defourny was tasked with establishing a secondary "cluster" location of the Centre for Metallurgical Research in 1999, and returned to the organization three years later as a management advisor.
Mr. Defourny continues to serve as an advisor to the Centre for Metallurgical Research, and operates within his own company, CEQMAS, an independent consulting practice focused on materials, quality and systems engineering and testing. In addition to his industry expertise, he is a professor for the Belgian Welding Association, lecturing on topics in testing, weldability, abrasion and wear, and measurement standardization. Mr. Defourny is Chairman of the board of the Belgian certification body OCAB, a board director of CONSCERT, a member of the Belgian Commission for Road Equipment and has provided expert advisory and testimony for several international standardization and safety committees.
Extensively published, Mr. Defourny has contributed to more than 80 published articles and scientific papers, and holds 30 pending patents. Many of his published studies have been suggested or ratified as official documents for use in industry standardization, and his research interests include the industrial properties of steel and other metals, with a particular focus on accelerated cooling, texture and mill rolling processes. Mr. Defourny has been invited to participate in symposia and industry conferences throughout Europe, Canada, Japan and the United States, and is a member of the Belgian delegation to the European Committee for Standardization, the American Society for Metals and others.
