Marquis Who's Who Honors Steven D. Warren, PhD, with Inclusion in Who's Who in the World

Dr. Warren is a research ecologist for the United States Forest Service specializing in the ecology of natural and anthropogenic disturbance.

SALEM, UT, October 09, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to honor Steven D. Warren, PhD, with inclusion in Who's Who in the World. An accomplished listee, Dr. Warren celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Warren is a research ecologist with more than four decades of experience. He attained a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from Brigham Young University in 1980 and 1982, respectively, and earned a Doctor of Philosophy from Texas A&M University in 1985. Dr. Warren was a Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control (CPESC) specialist for many years while working on heavily disturbed military training areas throughout the United States and Germany.

Dr. Warren began his career in 1985 as a research ecologist for the United States Army Construction Engineering Research Laboratory in Champaign, Illinois, where he specialized in site studies and impact models for use in predicting and understanding the environmental effects of United States Army training activities. He was named Researcher of the Year and was presented an Army Civilian Research Award for his contributions there. He was later appointed as a research ecologist and subsequently the Director of the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado. Since 2011, Dr. Warren has worked for the United States Forest Service as a research ecologist. Over his career, he has performed site condition, soil stabilization, and land reclamation efforts on severely disturbed terrain in the majority of the 50 U.S. states. He has also performed research and published results in Chile, Germany, and Panama. He has participated in professional meetings and workshops in Belgium, Canada, Chile, England, Germany, Iceland, Latvia, Mexico, and South Korea.

Dr. Warren attributes his success to a lifelong interest in the out-of-doors, a spirit of inquiry, and refusal to accept conventional wisdom at face value. For example, he was long taught that endangered species are obligately late-successional and require protection from anthropogenic disturbance. His research has shown, however, that many endangered species require disturbance at some point in their lifetimes to create conditions necessary for establishment, survival, and/or reproduction. In addition, he has studied in-depth the ecology of biological soil crusts, i.e., bacteria, fungi, terrestrial algae, and bryophytes that occupy and stabilize surface soils against wind and water erosion.
Long-thought to be unique to arid areas, Dr. Warren has shown that they occur on any soil surface that is bare for extended periods regardless of the cause, whether it be aridity or disturbance, in arid areas to the humid tropics. They are dispersed globally in the air. His research has also shown that the flowers of cacti in the driest area of the world, the Atacama Desert of northern Chile, and of Joshua Trees in the Mojave Desert of the USA are limited to the equatorial sides of the plants, presumably to reduce physiological stress.
