Mr. Michaelis was born in 1938 in Missoula, Montana. He grew up in Salem, Oregon, where he became Senior Class President of the Class of 1956 of North Salem High School. Mr. Michaelis graduated from Stanford University in 1962 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science. In 1965, he obtained a LIb. Degree from the University of California Boalt Hall School of Law, currently known as Berkeley Law. He was admitted to the State Bar of California and various United States District Courts in California.
Following the conclusion of his education, Mr. Michaelis served in West Germany from 1966 to 1968 as a Captain in the United States Army on the General Staff of the 8th Infantry Division, where he was awarded the Army Commendation Medal. Upon his return to the U.S., he worked as a Deputy District Attorney for the County of Sacramento, California, obtaining considerable jury trial experience. In 1978, he founded the law firm of Michaelis, Montanari & Johnson in Westlake Village, California, specializing in the defense of aviation accidents, including space law. He obtained a private single engine land pilot certificate from. the Federal Aviation Administration.
Throughout his tenure, Mr. Michaelis has been admitted to practice law by the State Bar of California and the United States District Court for the Northern, Central and Southern Districts of California. Additionally, he maintains memberships with the Defense Research Institute, the Association of Southern California Defense Counsel, the Environmental Law Section of the State Bar of California and the Organization of Flying Adjusters. Moreover, Mr. Michaelis has been consistently acknowledged as a guest at several symposiums and speaking engagements by a number of the aforementioned organizations.
In 1982, he was elected President of the Los Angeles Chapter of the Aviation Insurance Association.
He was designated by his peers as a Martindale-Hubbell AV preeminent attorney.
In 1992, he was included in Who's Who in American Law.
Mr. Michaelis was selected to be a speaker at the SMU Aviation Law Symposium twice, and at the annual conference of the Organization of Flying Adjusters four times.
He retired in 2020.
