Terrence F. Blaschke, MD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Blaschke, MD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. Blaschke has enjoyed a long and successful career devoted to both clinical medicine teaching and research, spanning nearly 50 years before becoming professor emeritus of medicine and molecular pharmacology at the Stanford University School of Medicine in 2012, to take a position as a Senior Advisor in Global Health at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Among his many roles during his tenure at Stanford he served as Associate Dean for Medical Student Advising and Chair of the Stanford General Clinical Research Center Advisory Committee. In 1999 Dr. Blaschke received the Henry J. Kaiser Award for Outstanding Contributions to Medical Education from Stanford University School of Medicine. After a sabbatical in 1997 as a Visiting Faculty at the Moi University School of Medicine in Eldoret, Kenya. Dr. Blaschke subsequently became an adjunct professor of medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine. In 2001 Dr. Blaschke became an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Bioengineering and Therapeutic Sciences, School of Pharmacy at the University of California, San Francisco based on his teaching and research there.

Dr. Blaschke received a B.S. degree in mathematics from the University of Denver and his M.D. degree from Columbia University. His subsequent medical training included an internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the University of California at Los Angeles Center for Health Sciences, followed by 2 years as a clinical associate at the National Institutes of Health and 2 years as a research fellow in the Division of Clinical Pharmacology at the University of California San Francisco Medical Center.

Dr. Blaschke's academic research while at Stanford concentrated on the sources of variability in drug response, with a focus on medication adherence. He has disseminated the findings of his research by publication of over 190 scholarly articles in peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Blaschke has also served on many editorial boards and since 1989 remains active as an associate editor of the Annual Review of Pharmacology and Toxicology.

Because of his goal in improving the quality and access to effective therapies, Dr. Blaschke has consulted worldwide throughout his career. He served as chairperson of the pharmacology committee of the AIDS Clinical Trials Group, one of the largest HIV clinical trials organizations in the world. He has also served on two US Food and Drug committees, including as chair of the Generic Drugs Advisory Committee and a member of the Non-prescription Drugs Advisory Committee. In addition to these and other public service activities, Dr. Blaschke maintained his involvement in new drug development as a scientific advisor for a number of pharmaceutical companies.

Throughout his long career Dr. Blaschke has remained actively involved with a number of professional organizations relevant to his interest in therapeutics. Dr. Blaschke is a longtime member and a past president of the American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, which bestowed him with the Rawls-Palmer Progress in Medicine Lecture and Award, the Henry W. Elliott Distinguished Service Award and the Oscar B. Hunter Award. Other relevant organizations have included the American College of Clinical Pharmacology, from which he received an Honorary Fellowship Award, and the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) Foundation from which he received a Faculty Development Award in 1980 and the 2014 Award in Excellence in Clinical Pharmacology.

International health has long been an important component of his life, dating back to his involvement in HIV therapeutics in 1990. Dr. Blaschke's decision to leave Stanford and join the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in 2012 was reinforced by his involvement in Kenya in 1997 and his research in low-and middle-income countries is indicative of that commitment, which continues today.
