Murray L. Janower Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Janower with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Murray L. Following his studies at the University of Detroit, Dr. Janower pursued his Doctorate of Medicine degree from Wayne State University. In 1958, as the graduating medical student with the most research, he received the Angus McLain award. Upon completing an internship at Philadelphia General Hospital he began his Radiology residency at the Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Janower was drafted after his first year of residency into the U.S. Public Health Service where he served from 1959 to 1961. The Bureau of Radiological Health was the first government agency established after the Atomic Bomb Causality Commission. Dr. Janower was the second radiologist appointed to this agency and was the first Director of their research laboratory where among other things he arranged the first Symposium on Radiation Reduction of Patient Dosage from Diagnostic Radiology with participation of most United States experts which was published as his first book.

He returned to his residency in Radiology at MGH upon graduation then joined the staff and received an additional appointment at Harvard University. Dr. Janower was a general radiologist with special expertise in Pulmonary and Gastrointestinal Radiology. His was fascinated by how the radiology department met its obligations to patients, physicians and the hospital. He authored his second book on this subject entitled "Administration of a Radiology Department". A busy consultant and lecturer to many departments in the United States and abroad, Dr. Janower has been called the "grandfather" of Department Administration. Simultaneously, he helped to establish both, the first Society of Pulmonary Radiologists, the Fleischner Society, and the first Society of Gastrointestinal Radiology.

He progressed from MGH in 1971 where he became the Chairman of Radiology at St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester, MA, where he helped to establish the Radiology Department at the new University of Massachusetts where he became a Professor. He remained at Worcester, MA for 30 years while at the same time remained a consultant at MGH and eventually received the honored staff pin for commemorating his 60 years of service.

As a respected voice in his field, Dr. Janower has written an additional 2 books and contributed more than 100 articles to medical journals throughout his career.

To remain aware of developments affecting his field, Dr. Janower has maintained his professional affiliation with a number of pertinent organizations. To wit, he has been the president of the American College of Radiology, the Association of Program Directors of Radiology, the New England Roentgen Ray Society and the Massachusetts Radiological Society. In his spare time outside of work, Dr. Janower enjoys reading, staying up-to-date on the news and the economy, playing tennis, bowling, jogging, bicycling and going to restaurants and shows.

He claims that the best decision of his life was marrying Linda sixty years ago and having the joy of 3 children and 9 grandchildren.
