Celestia "Tia" Savoye Higano, MD, Celebrated for Dedication to the Field of Medicine

Dr. Higano specializes in prostate cancer research and medical education with several prestigious medical centers



    SEATTLE, WA, October 14, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Celestia "Tia" Savoye Higano, MD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Influenced by her father, Norio Higano, who specialized in endocrinology and nuclear medicine, Dr. Higano was inspired to enter the field of medicine. Dr. Higano attended Bryn Mawr College and graduated magna cum laude from Clark University in 1974 with a Bachelor of Arts in biology. She went on to earn a Doctor of Medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in 1979 and trained in internal medicine at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine in Rochester, MN from 1979 to 1982. In 1982, she moved to Seattle for a fellowship in oncology and bone marrow transplantation at the University of Washington (UW) and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (FHCRC) under Dr. E. Donnall Thomas, a Nobel Laureate in Medicine.

After completing her fellowship in 1984, she joined the faculty at UW where she achieved the rank of Professor in the Physician/Scientist pathway. She led the prostate cancer clinical research program and served as the Principal Investigator for the Department of Defense Prostate Cancer Clinical Trials Consortium (PCCTC), UW being one of the original 11 institutions including Dana Farber, Memorial Sloan Kettering, Johns Hopkins, Duke, University of Michigan, University of California San Francisco, MD Anderson, University of Wisconsin, Oregon Health Sciences, and Wayne State. She was instrumental in bringing sipuleucel-T, the first immunotherapy for prostate cancer, to the clinic. Research studies conducted by the PCCTC collectively impacted the standard of care for patients with prostate cancer, bringing drugs such as enzalutamide, apalutamide, abiraterone, radium 223 to patients.

From 2002-2012, she was the Director of the Clinical Core of the Pacific Northwest Prostate Cancer Specialized Program of Research Excellence (SPORE) program. In 2013, she became the consulting Medical Director for the Prostate Cancer Supportive Care Program at the Vancouver Prostate Centre and an adjunct Professor in the Department of Urological Sciences while she continued to lead her research program at UW. She also held a joint appointment as a Member of the Clinical Division of FHCRC. From 2010 to 2020 she was a member of the prostate cancer guidelines panel of the National Comprehensive Cancer Center Network. She retired from the University of Washington in July 2020.

She is a member of the Washington State Medical Association, the Society of Women in Urology, the American Association for Cancer Research, the European Society for Medical Oncology, the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Urological Association.

Dr. Higano has been invited to give hundreds of lectures globally and is the author/co-author of more than 300 peer reviewed articles. She has received numerous honors and awards including the National Honor Society, Phi Beta Kappa, Alpha Omega Alpha, Fellow of the American College of Physicians, America's Top Doctors, Forbes Distinguished Alumni Award. She remains the Medical Director for the Prostate Cancer Supportive Care Program and is leading the expansion of the program throughout BC Cancer in British Columbia. She continues her other academic and teaching activities and counselling patients.
