Mr. Meany enjoyed a long and successful career in library science that spanned four decades. Acquired by Centralia College in 1963 as an assistant librarian, he later contributed for nearly two decades as a media services and technical processes librarian before being promoted to become a library director. Mr. Meany retired in 2002 after 14 years in his role.
An avid bicyclist, Mr. Meany was involved locally as a member of the Washington State Bicycling advisory and pedestrian committee in Olympia, Washington, between 1990 and 1999. He also served as the chairperson for several years. Moreover, Mr. Meany participated with several local government plans to improve road access for bicyclists. For his contributions, he notably received the Platinum Pedal Award from the Northwest Bicycle Federation in 1997.
Mr. Meany pursued a Bachelor of Arts at Saint Mary's College in California, graduating in 1960. During his undergraduate studies, he worked in the school library, where he developed a deep interest in the field and had the good fortune to be mentored by the head librarian, Mr. William McKaska, and the assistant librarian, Brother Dennis Goodman, FSC. After acquiring his degree, Mr. Meany then attended the University of Washington where he received a master's degree in librarianship in 1963.
During the course of his illustrious career, Mr. Meany experienced significant changes in the library that were a direct result of the advancement of computer technology. Learning how to navigate the new technology was challenging, but also rewarding. Mr. Meany not only enjoyed becoming computer literate, but also teaching others on campus as well. Among his many professional memberships, Mr. Meany was aligned with the Destination Centralia Marketing Association, where he was president from 1999 to 2001.
