Johnnie Mae Shields has been Inducted into the Marquis Who's Who Registry

Ms. Shields is an educator and administrator

FERRUM, VA, October 28, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Johnnie Mae Shields has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Celebrating more than 38 years of service to her community and the educational profession, Ms. Shields has garnered a laudable reputation as a classroom teacher and school administrator. Inspired by her mother, who had wanted to teach but was unable to go to school and live out her dream due to chronic illness, the younger woman felt an intrinsic calling to become an educator. As her mother was unable to live out her dream, her mother's dream continued to live on through her. After briefly considering studying cosmetology or accounting, Ms. Shields enrolled in Winston-Salem State University, where she would complete a Bachelor of Science in elementary education in 1977.

From 1986 until 2006, Ms. Shields served as a teacher for Rockingham County Schools, rising to excel as an acting administrator for part of her tenure. Dedicated to her own continuing growth and education, she returned to Appalachian State University in the early 2000s, graduating in 2006 with a Master of Arts in educational leadership and administration. Since 2006, Ms. Shields has been a teacher for Franklin County Public Schools, where she hopes to continue to use her expertise to share with new and other aspiring teachers.

Well regarded for her contributions to the field, Ms. Shields has been presented with a Rockingham County Teacher of the Year Award, and is active in the Franklin County chapter of the National Education Association. She considers it her greatest accomplishment to make an impact on her students' lives, and treasures the students who return to thank her and check in with her after graduation. Ms. Shields is grateful for the blessings she has received, the opportunity to teach for nearly four decades and her five children. Ms. Shields attributes her success to her love of children, her understanding, compassion and belief that all children can be successful when given equal opportunity and provided with environments conducive to learning for all. She gives glory to God who gave her the inspiration and guidance to affect lives in special ways. She gives thanks to her loving husband who supported her in all her endeavors who lent a listening ear, and offered spiritual advice when needed. In addition to her educational service, she is active in her community as a volunteer for the Neighbors Helping Neighbors Kitchen and a member of the Ferrum Fire Department Auxiliary and the Ferrum Rescue Squad.
