Mary R. Jefferson Nelson Burciaga Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

    WASHINGTON, DC, October 28, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Mary R. Jefferson Nelson Burciaga with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Ms. Burciaga celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. Ms. Burciaga has been serving as a reemployed annuitant cadre, or RAC, which is a volunteer/intermittent position, with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) since 2006. Based in Washington, DC, the organization actively seeks motivated federal civil service retirees who are willing to return to work on an intermittent basis to provide readily available support within the United States in the event of natural or manmade disasters and for other important missions as a part of the USACE.

Prior to her service, Ms. Burciaga was the Mississippi State President for AARP in Jackson, MS, between 2004 and 2006. She also worked for the VA Medical Center for 15 years beginning in 1974 as a Claims Clerk, Personnel Clerk, Personnel Processing Clerk, Personnel Staffing Specialist and a Human Resources Specialist. Furthermore, she devoted another 15 years, with the USACE, as a Staffing Assistant in the Civilian Personnel Office between 1986 and 2001, in Vicksburg, MS.

Ms. Burciaga, was instrumental in getting the TTY relay system set up for the telephone system for deaf students, and the implementation of having flashing lights placed in dormitories to alert deaf students of fire alarms and bad weather alerts, Hinds Community College, Raymond, MS. She was involved with numerous other organizations throughout the years as well, Ms. Burciaga notably organized the Millennium Section of National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) in Vicksburg, MS, where she also served as president. International Chairperson for NCNW, state of MS. International Division for the National Council of Negron Women, Inc. State of Mississippi and served as president between 1977 and 1979. Other commitments included serving on the board for Hinds Community College, as chair of the organizing committee of the Jackson Hinds chapter of Operation PUSH and as a member of the Lieutenant Governor's Board for Day Care in Honolulu, HI. Ms. Burciaga served on the board of directors of the Rape Crisis Center in Jackson 1981 and, the board of directors of the NCNW Daycare Center in Jackson since 1983, and she is an active member of the National Baptist Association and member and a member of the Deaconess Ministry of her local church.

Ms. Burciaga won a Volunteer of the Year Award from AARP in 2006. She also received multiple other recognitions, including the Golden Hands Award from the National Deaf Association in 1992 for her work with the deaf, hard of hearing and hearing-impaired employees and their supervisors. She received a Special Act Award from the VA Medical Center in 1981 and numerous performance awards from the USACE as well. Most notably, Ms. Burciaga was elected as the first African American to be named Woman of the Year at the 216th year history celebration of the USACE. Ms. Burciaga received recognition in the Prince Hall Newsletter for Personnel Managers. She served on the Speakers network for a number of years. She has been cited in the first edition of Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America and the 15th edition of Who's Who of American Women.

Ms. Burciaga first studied at Jackson State University before earning a Bachelor of Science from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff in 1966. She then completed additional postgraduate coursework at Jackson State University and the North Alabama College of Commerce. She was later an Evangelism graduate in 2018. She is certified in American Sign Language, Level I.

Born in Centreville, MS, Ms. Burciaga earned the opportunity to appear as an extra in two movies, "Ghost of Mississippi" and "Mississippi Burning," which was quite an experience. She marched for voter rights with the Rev Dr. Martin Luther King, in Jackson, MS after Medgar Evers funeral and the Rev Jesse Jackson in the Delta of MS. Happily married, Ms. Burciaga has three children and six grandchildren. She also loves to sew, read and travel in her free time.
