A professor emeritus in the department of global and sociocultural studies at Florida International University (FIU) in Miami, Florida, Dr. Maingot previously taught courses in Caribbean studies and sociology. Throughout his career, he extensively studied political sociology, as well as the Latin America/Caribbean cultures. Likewise, Dr. Maingot notably secured several grants from the Social Science Research Council to study in Cuba and Haiti, as well as from the Carnegie Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation for his research in Caribbean studies.

Dr. Maingot formerly held academic appointments at Yale University, for which he taught both history and sociology between 1968 and 1972 and operated as the director of the Antilles research program. Among other noteworthy roles, he served as a senior scientist for Rand Corporation in Santa Monica, California from 1985 to 1995, an adjunct professor of Mexican and Caribbean studies at the U.S. Air Force Special Operations School in Hurlburt Field, Florida and a visiting scholar at both the Institute of Developing Economies in Tokyo and the Institute de'Etudes Politiques in France. A native of Trinidad, Dr. Maingot worked as an advisor for the Prime Minister of Trinidad & Tobago during the early 1970s.

Dr. Maingot was a member of the Constitutional Reform Commission of Trinidad and Tobago. Among his other civic duties, he has testified before U.S. Congress multiple times between 1977 and 2009 and before the U.S. Senate in 1993 as an expert in his field. Additionally, Dr. Maingot has traveled extensively, lecturing over 50 times on worldwide cruise lines.

A prolific author, Dr. Maingot has published more than 10 books and approximately 110 refereed journal articles. He also provided his expertise as an associate editor for the Caribbean Review and as the editor of Hemisphere, FIU's Latin American and Caribbean Center magazine. Dr. Maingot's book credits additionally include "The United States and the Caribbean: Challenges of an Asymmetrical Relationship," "Historical Dictionary of U.S.-Caribbean Relations" and "The United States and the Caribbean: Transforming Hegemony and Sovereignty."

Dr. Maingot obtained an undergraduate degree at the University of Florida in 1960. Dr. Maingot concluded his academic efforts at the University of Florida, earning a Doctor of Philosophy in 1967. He subsequently completed postdoctoral coursework at Yale University during 1966.

Aligned with several industry related organizations in support of his career, Dr. Maingot is a respected member and past president of the Caribbean Studies Association. He is also affiliated with the Latin American Studies Association, for which he was appointed as the co-chairman of the organization's annual meetings on several occasions. Recognized with a Distinguished Service Medallion from FIU in 2004, he was later honored with a Gold Medal in 2014 from Centro de Altos Estudios in San Juan, Puerto Rico. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Maingot has been cited in the 54th edition of Who's Who in America.
