Lee G. Pondrom Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Pondrom with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Pondrom celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. Shortly after acquiring his doctorate degree in 1958, Dr. Pondrom joined the faculty at Columbia University as an instructor in the department of physics in 1960. Three years later, he began a tenured career with the University of Wisconsin. Acquired as an associate professor in the department of physics, he was raised to the position of a full professor in 1969 and, from 1992 to 2011, was the Robert Williams Wood professor. Dr. Pondrom also chaired the department for three years, beginning in 1997.

Apart from teaching, Dr. Pondrom distinguished himself as a seasoned scientist on campus. As a member of the Wisconsin High Energy Physics group, he conducted research regarding experimental and theoretical limits of particle physics. As a result of his research, he contributed to dozens of scientific journal articles. In retirement, Dr. Pondrom has continued writing, publishing his first book through World Scientific in 2018, titled "The Soviet Atomic Project: How the Soviet Union Obtained the Atomic Bomb." His second book, due in 2021, is titled "Introduction to High Energy Physics: Particle Physics for the Beginner."

Serving an instrumental role in his field, Dr. Pondrom was active on various committees throughout his career, such as the CDRF awards committee to scientists of the former Soviet Union. He was also a member of the science policy committee of the SSC Laboratory and the science policy committee of the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. Additionally, Dr. Pondrom was aligned with the U.S. Department of Energy in various roles, including as a member of the high-energy advisory panel.

An alumnus of Southern Methodist University, Dr. Pondrom received a Bachelor of Science in 1953. He subsequently transferred to the University of Chicago, where he completed both a Master of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1956 and 1958, respectively. After college, Dr. Pondrom served his country to the rank of a first lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force between 1958 and 1960. In August 1961 he married Cyrena Jo Norman from Fort Worth, Texas. They have been married 59 years.

Well regarded in his field, Dr. Pondrom was named as a fellow of such organizations as the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science and the American Physical Society, where he served in numerous positions of high leadership. He has also remained active on the Society's committee on the status of women in physics since 1989. Among his other affiliations, Dr. Pondrom is an active member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and is a past president of the Wisconsin alpha chapter of Phi Beta Kappa.

From 1971 to 1972, Dr. Pondrom received a J.S. Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship. Recognized for his achievements, he has been the recipient of a Distinguished Alumni Award from Southern Methodist University in 1983, the W.K.H. Panofsky Award from the American Physical Society in 1994, and a Distinguished Graduate Award from Southern Methodist University's physics department in 2018. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Pondrom has been cited in close to 30 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the Midwest.
