Arnold Otto Benz, PhD, has been Inducted into the Marquis Who's Who Registry

Dr. Benz is an astronomer, researcher and professor emeritus at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich)

BÜLACH, SWITZERLAND, November 04, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Arnold Otto Benz, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Benz is a noted astrophysicist and educator best known for his investigations of the relationship between high frequency radio emissions, x-rays and particle acceleration in solar and stellar flares, and for decades of popular astronomy presentations on Swiss television and radio. As a young teenager, he began building model rockets and observing stars with a telescope, and he began studying physics after the Sputnik launch. After completing a diploma in theoretical physics at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Dr. Benz traveled to the United States to study at Cornell University, then a hub for innovative research in physics and astronomy, earning a Master of Arts in 1970 and a Doctor of Philosophy in astrophysics in 1973.

Dr. Benz returned to Zurich the same year as a research associate of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, where he began an in-depth study of physical plasma processes in the solar corona and initiated a radio astronomy research group that would remain active until 2010. He became a lecturer in the Institute's Department of Physics in 1974, and was nominated for a professorship in astrophysics in 1993. Dr. Benz was granted professor emeritus status in 2010, and continues to research and work part-time at both ETH Zurich and the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Northwestern Switzerland.

Dr. Benz is the author of more than 400 articles and scientific papers published in professional journals, and several theoretical physics texts in German and English including "Plasmaphysik" and "Plasma Astrophysics." His work has included research into star formation using data collected from the Herschel Space Observatory. He is the namesake of the Güdel-Benz relation, a measure of correlation between x-ray and radio waves in solar and stellar emissions. As a pioneer in his discipline, Dr. Benz has been invited to address numerous international panels and symposia on astronomy and physics throughout his career. He is a member of the Swiss Society for Astrophysics and Astronomy and the International Society for Science and Religion, and has held leadership roles with the European Astronomical Society, the International Astronomical Union and the European Committee on Solar Radio Astronomers, among others.

Dr. Benz expanded his explorations into the nature of scientific and theological perception. Most successful was his interdisciplinary book on "Die Zukunft des Universums", which underwent eight editions and appeared in ten languages. In collaboration with a theologian he published recently "Mission to Saturn - A Debate about Science and God." He has been bestowed with honorary doctoral degrees for his interdisciplinary work from the University of Zurich and the University of the South.
