Mr. Whitehead is an experienced attorney of more than four decades who, for the past 12 years, has represented clients as the owner of the Law Office of James F. Whitehead. He specializes in civil litigation, ranging from maritime law to personal injury and death, insurance subrogation, employment discrimination, mediation, and arbitration. Mr. Whitehead has appeared before state and federal courts throughout Washington and Alaska, and in the state court in Idaho. He has argued before the Washington Court of Appeals, the Washington Supreme Court, the Supreme Court of Idaho, and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. A former partner at Le Gros Buchanan & Paul, he also was a partner at McGee, Reno & Whitehead, and Holmes Weddle & Barcott, until forming his own firm in 2008.

Drawing inspiration from his father, who advanced from an entry-level position to serving as the president of the Daybrite Lighting Company in St. Louis, Missouri, Mr. Whitehead internalized the lessons of dedication and hard work. He completed a public speaking course at the University of Washington early in his legal career that helped him overcome his fear of public speaking, and he made many speeches in Western Washington in 1976 in support of a nuclear safeguards initiative and subsequently has spoken on numerous occasions at maritime seminars and meetings of trade groups, in addition to conducting numerous trials in state and federal courts. Mr. Whitehead notably works alongside his wife, Nancy Whitehead, a talented immigration lawyer, who also assists him on personal injury cases.

In a career suffused with highlights, Mr. Whitehead is proud to have served as a member of the Maritime Law Association of the United States since 1980 and a member of its Board from 2000-2003, the associate editor for Seattle of American Maritime Cases for the last 30 years, a member of the National Advisory Board and current practicing arbitrator for the Maritime Arbitration Association of the United States, a contract arbitrator for National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Crab Rationalization Program for the Bering Sea Aleutian Island Crab Fisheries, the chairperson of the 1996 International Maritime Law Conference in Seattle, twice Chairman of Seattle's Maritime Day Luncheon, and an American attendee and participant at the 2001 Conference of the Comite Maritime International in Singapore. He was also an organizer and lecturer at Pacific Northwest Admiralty Law Institute Seminars between 1981 and 1996. Mr. Whitehead has also served on numerous occasions as a volunteer judge of multiple different law school and undergraduate moot court competitions.

As a writer, Mr. Whitehead has contributed numerous articles on maritime law in legal and trade journals. He also authored 'Deviation: Should the Doctrine Apply to On-Deck Carriage?' in the Maritime Lawyer during the Spring of 1981. As an expert in his field, in addition to his work in organizing and speaking at legal seminars. Mr. Whitehead also participated for many years as a faculty member at annual Port of Seattle International Trade Seminars. as well as before numerous other local maritime industry groups. He also presented at the University of Washington School of Law on maritime commerce in the Puget Sound region.

Mr. Whitehead was educated at Stanford University, attaining a degree in history, with distinction, in 1968. Shortly thereafter, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served his country between 1969 and 1973. In 1975, he earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from the University of Michigan. Mr. Whitehead has been admitted to practice law by the Washington and Alaska Bar Associations, the Idaho Superior and Supreme Courts, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern and Western Districts of Washington and the District of Alaska, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, and the Supreme Court of the United States.

Celebrated for his success, Mr. Whitehead has been featured in several prominent legal publications, including recognition in Top Lawyers in Washington and in the Top 1% Most Honored Lawyers in The American Registry.
