Dr. Sowinski is a renowned nuclear physicist who has been employed with the Department of Energy in Washington, D.C., for the past decade as a program manager in the Office of Nuclear Physics. Prior to joining the department, he conducted research at Indiana University in Bloomington for more than 25 years. After two years as a postdoctoral fellow on campus, Dr. Sowinski contributed for more than a decade as an assistant and associate research scientist, before being named as a senior research scientist in 1998.

Recognized for his work, Dr. Sowinski was a researcher at several nuclear physics facilities, including at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Long Island, New York, and the Indiana University Cyclotron Facility. He also had the opportunity to conduct research while on a one-year sabbatical abroad at DESY Laboratory in Germany. During his career as a scientist, Dr. Sowinski was able to demonstrate that charge symmetry is violated in the nucleon-nucleon force and that gluons contribute to the spin of protons.

A prolific author, Dr. Sowinski has contributed numerous scientific articles to several prominent journals, including Physical Review Letters and Physics Letters. Covering a variety of topics, including the spin structure of nuclei and nucleons, he also co-edited the 1990 scientific book, "Physics with Polarized Beams on Polarized Targets." Active with several professional organizations, Dr. Sowinski is a presently a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Physical Society. He is also a member of the honorable societies of Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi.

An alumnus of the University of Wisconsin, Dr. Sowinski earned a Bachelor of Science in physics and mathematics in 1977. Thereafter, he received a Master of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy in physics in 1982 and 1984, respectively. Dr. Sowinski was recognized by Menomonee Falls East High School in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin by being inducted into the school's Hall of Fame.
