After receiving a Doctor of Medicine from the Central University of Venezuela, Dr. Zapata-Sirvent obtained specialization in general and plastic surgery. Eminently qualified in his field, he began working at the University of Colorado, where he conducted research and worked with bum victims, during which time he developed a deep understanding for the complexity of care in the healing process after treatment. Throughout the course of his professional journey, Dr. Zapata-Sirvent worked at the University of California at San Diego, as well as a private hospital "Centro Medico de Caracas" in Venezuela for two decades before venturing into his current position as a faculty in the plastic surgery division at the University of Texas Medical Branch and Shriners Hospital for Children Galveston.
Well regarded as a prolific scholar, Dr. Zapata-Sirvent has written more than eighty peer-reviewed scientific papers, as well as eight books on bums and plastic surgery. Over the years, he has been most proud of his appointments as the president of the Venezuelan Plastic Surgery Society and the Venezuelan Bum Association. He also maintains his professional affiliation with the American College of Surgeons, the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the Federation of Latin American Plastic Surgery Societies, the American Bum Association and the American Medical Association. He has attributed his professional success to hard work, education and his continued commitment to improvement.
