Before obtaining his current positions, Dr. Cook worked for more than 30 years as a Senior Research Geologist with the U.S. Geological Survey in California. Earlier, he gained valuable expertise in the field a Professor of Geology and Senior Sedimentologist with the University of California, a Research Petroleum Exploration Geologist with Marathon Oil Company. Dr. Cook has also taught as an Adjunct Professor at a number of academic institutions at the University of Wyoming and the University of Nevada. Las Vegas. In a career suffused with highlights, it is difficult to single out one moment that stands above the rest. Dr. Cook has had the privilege of conducting independent field research studies for major and junior gold, oil and gas companies around the world, examining carbonate reefs, platforms and basins aged up to 500 million years. Likewise. Dr. Cook is proud to serve as the Chief Sedimentologist during 2 cruises of the U.S.S. Glomar Challenger during the Deep-Sea Drilling Project, which sought to prove or disprove the hypothesis of plate tectonics and sea-floor spreading. During these cruises, he and his team were able to prove that sea-floor spreading is a reality.
An expert in his field. Dr, Cook obtained a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in geology from the University of California Santa Barbara in 1961 and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in the same discipline at the prestigious University of California Berkeley in 1965. He then earned a Certification as a Professional Geologist (CPG-11001) through the American Institute of Professional Geologists. Dedicated to parlaying his knowledge: to others, he consistently gives pro-bono talks on the subject of geology 10 middle school students. In light of his outstanding body of work, he was named as the Distinguished Alumni of the Year through Santa Barbara High School Alumnus Association in 2008 and received the George C. Mason Award for Best Paper presented an international conference.
