Through 1987, Dr. Junker pursued additional postgraduate coursework at the University of Cologne, culminating in the publication of his dissertation on a 14th century medical text.
From 1985 until 1986, Dr. Junker served as a medical officer at the military hospital in Bundeswehr, Germany. In 1986, he was appointed as an assistant anesthesiologist at the Hospital Lüdenscheid and joined the anesthesiology team at the Sanaklinikum Remscheid. In 1992, Dr. Junker accepted a position as a senior physician at the Sanaklinikum Remscheid, where he continued to advance before eventually becoming the chief physician representative in 1995 and the head of the pain management and palliative therapy department in 2002.
Since 2010, Dr. Junker has excelled as the chief physician of the Sanaklinikum Remscheid Center for Anaesthesia, Intensive Care, Pain, and Palliative Medicine. His practice has prioritized the ethics and patient care complexities of managing transitions from intensive to palliative care, and he emphasizes the importance of effective communication and working relationships with other specialist providers in creating positive patient outcomes. Dr. Junker's research has been extensively published in German and English, and has covered a diverse range of topics in pain management, including the effective treatment for patients who are unable to communicate verbally, numerous studies on approaches to managing neuropathy and the treatment of complex pain syndromes with comorbid diagnosis.
As an expert in pain management, Dr. Junker has been recognized as a Focus Top Physician annually since 2010. He was additionally recruited to the Sanaklinikum Remscheid Center's quality of life advisory board. Dr. Junker is further active as a speaker and advisor on COX-2 inhibitor drugs and opioid pain relievers for Pfizer Germany.
Dr. Junker is a strong advocate of patient-centered medicine, and cautions providers against an excessive focus on the economics of the healthcare system.
