Having distinguished himself as a professor emeritus of rhetoric at the University of California, Dr. Sloane retired in 1993 after more than 20 years on the Berkeley campus. As a faculty member, he was influential not only in the classroom, but also as the presidential chairperson of freshman and sophomore education between 1987 and 1990. Additionally, he had the good fortune to serve as the chairperson of the rhetoric department between 1970 and 1992. Dr. Sloane's extensive career in academia has included previous appointments at the University of Illinois as an assistant and associate professor of speech, as the associate head of the department and as the assistant dean of liberal arts and sciences for a span of seven years. He briefly taught as an instructor of English at Washington and Lee University.

Leveraging his expertise, Dr. Sloane served as the director of the National Endowment of Humanities summer seminar for college teachers while teaching at the University of California. He also devoted an extensive amount of his time writing. He is notably the author and editor of several books, including "The Oral Study of Literature" in 1966, "The Rhetoric of Renaissance Poetry" with Raymond B. Waddington in 1974, "Interpretation" with Joanna H. Maclay in 1972, "Donne, Milton and the End of Humanist Rhetoric," in 1985 and "On the Contrary" in 1997. Dr. Sloane also published numerous scholarly articles in professional journals throughout his career, and served as the editor-in-chief of the 2001 edition of "Encyclopedia of Rhetoric," a comprehensive survey of the latest research in the field.

Dr. Sloane studied at Southern Illinois University where he acquired a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts in 1951 and 1952, respectively. He later attained a Doctor of Philosophy in interpretation at Northwestern University in 1960. While pursuing his graduate work at Northwestern, he drew inspiration from a distinguished professor, who was responsible for directing his dissertation. In addition to his schooling, Dr. Sloane served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Naval Reserve between 1952 and 1955.

Celebrated for his accomplishments, Dr. Sloane received an Instructional Development Award from the University of Illinois in 1965 and a Henry H. Huntington Library Research Award in 1967. He was also recognized with an award from the University of California Berkeley, which acknowledged him as the presidential chair, and for his exemplary work in undergraduate education. Apart from his accolades, Dr. Sloane received several fellowships, including a University of California humanities research fellow in 1974 and a Guggenheim fellow from 1981 to 1982.
