John M. Carson Celebrated for Dedication to the Fields of Technology and Law

Mr. Carson is an intellectual property and patent attorney with Knobbe Martens, LLP

SAN DIEGO, CA, December 08, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- John M. Carson has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Mr. Carson came from humble beginnings being raised in a military family and he inherited a voracious appetite for reading all genres which shaped his world view and fostered a broad range of interests. He started his professional career as a software engineer and continued as a systems engineer and this was followed by his career as a patent attorney. Together this commitment to two entirely different fields has spanned nearly four decades of expertise in developmental R&D and legal counseling and transactions relating to technological innovations. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in computer science from the University of California San Diego and a Master of Science in computer science from the University of Southern California. While an undergraduate he worked in the circuitry and firmware group at the mainframe division of NCR and, upon graduation, took a full time position at TRW (later acquired in part by Northrop Grumman), where he remained from 1981 to 1988. In the mid-1980s, Mr. Carson realized that transitioning into patent law would give him the opportunity to continue his curiosity for horizonal technologies while expanding his skill set into commercial and international opportunities available to him as an attorney. This occurred during a time of rapid globalization and economic transformation after the fall of the Berlin Wall. He completed his Doctor of Jurisprudence at the University of San Diego School of Law in 1988.

Three years after joining a small California law firm in 1988, Mr. Carson was made a partner of Knobbe Martens, LLP, which grew into one of the country's premier intellectual property law firms. He enjoys a diverse practice, representing clients in France, Belgium, Korea and China, and counseling companies in all phases of the growth curve, from start-up to enterprise. His practice involves representation of technology clients in the acquisition, protection and exploitation of IP rights, and particularly, patent portfolio development and management that maximizes value in complex IP environments. He also has extensive experience with the related needs of early stage companies as a founding advisor to one of the world's first start-up accelerators, assisting with the commercialization of technology developed at research institutions, and collaborating with founders, advisors and new management as a company scales or pivots. He is an active advisor in a Silicon Valley accelerator and he is a successful investor in early stage venture capital funds and directly in companies as an angel investor.

Mr. Carson is proud to have participated in the over tenfold growth in his law firm and its entry into the AMLAW 200 and he attributes his personal success to entrepreneurship, loyalty to his team and building a strong rapport with his clients. He has been recognized throughout his career as one of the leading intellectual property attorneys in the United States and the world. Intellectual Asset Management Magazine named him one of the World's Leading Patent Professionals in 2019, he has been included in the Best Lawyers in America each year since 2017, and he has been awarded a Martindale-Hubbell AV Preeminent for Twenty Years peer rating, the highest possible rating for attorneys. Among many other leadership positions, Mr. Carson is past president of ITechLaw association, past board member of AIPPI-US, co-chair of the CONNECT Financial Forum, the founder and co-chair of the AIPPI-US Asia Pacific Committee, a founder of the CONNECT Technology Law Clinic and a co-founder of his firm's Greater China Practice.

Notably, Mr. Carson has been regularly selected for inclusion in a number of domestic and international recognition publications, by way of example, four volumes of Who's Who Legal: California, and five editions of The International Who's Who of Internet and e-Commerce Lawyers, among many other accolades. Looking forward, Mr. Carson plans to spend more time enhancing his foreign language skills including Mandarin and to continue his self-education in military history and foreign policy. He also intends to pursue multifamily real estate development projects (in high school he worked summers for a mentor in construction and at a commercial real estate brokerage), and expects to leverage his technical and legal experience by advising as a board member at early stage tech companies . Lastly, at all times several books will inevitably be open on his nightstand.
