Having amassed over 50 years of experience at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Dr. Butel earned the title of chairperson emeritus in 2017 and distinguished service professor emeritus in 2018. Becoming a faculty member in 1968 after two years as a postdoctoral fellow on campus, she began her teaching career as an assistant professor. Dr. Butel's extensive background later included appointments as a full professor and the Joseph L. Melnick professor of virology between 1986 and 2018. During the course of her academic career, she was responsible for training approximately 50 graduate students and postdoctoral and clinical fellows in her research laboratory.
Dr. Butel's tremendous success at the institution earned her such roles as director of the Baylor Center for AIDS Research, head of the division of molecular virology, chairperson of the molecular virology and microbiology department, and leader of a Dan L. Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center's research program. She also led the Butel Laboratory, which focused on the study of biology and molecular biology of the polyomavirus, particularly the SV-40. During this time, Dr. Butel made specific contributions in vital research to the biology of tumor viruses and their cancer-causing mechanisms. Disseminating her findings, she authored approximately 300 scientific articles, review articles, and book chapters, was active on the editorial boards for several scientific journals between 1976 and 2018, and was a contributing editor to the virology section of nine editions of "Lange Medical Microbiology" from 1987 until 2013.
To share her expertise with other industry professionals, Dr. Butel has served on various committees, councils and ad hoc review panels. She was also a study section member of the National Institutes of Health from 1980 to 1984. In support of her career, Dr. Butel has been active as a member, former division chairperson and group IV representative of the American Society of Microbiology, as well as a former board governor of the Lakewood, Colorado, section of the International Association of Breast Cancer Research. Recognized by her peers as an elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Academy of Microbiology, she is also a member of the American Association for Cancer Research, the American Society for Cell Biology, the American Society for Virology and the Association of Medical School Microbiology and Immunology Chairs, as well as Sigma Xi.
Dr. Butel initially pursued a formal education at Kansas State University, from which she attained a Bachelor of Science, summa cum laude, in 1963. Following this accomplishment, she earned a Doctor of Philosophy, with honors, at Baylor University in 1966. Among her many achievements, she was the first woman at the Baylor College of Medicine to be awarded with an endowed professorship in 1986, to chair the academic unit in 1989 and to be designated as a distinguished service professor in 1995. She also secured an ongoing research grant from the National Institutes of Health between 1973 and 2015, as well as several awards ranging from a Distinguished Alumnus of the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences from Baylor College of Medicine in 2002 and 2017 to a BioHouston Women in Science Award in 2013. Furthermore, Dr. Butel was interviewed for the Texas Medical Center history project in 2015 and the Dr. Janet Butel Day was declared in her honor by the Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner in 2017.
